Officials check 'political' pedestal tray design at school

A controversy unfolded at a Nong Khai school on Teachers' Day after officials inspected pedestal trays designed by students that mocked recent political processes.
 

High school students of Chumpol Phisai school in Northeastern Nong Khai province attached sarcastic messages on a pedestal tray design. They wrote “250 Votes” on a the heavier side of a balance scale image and “Millions of Votes” on the lighter side of the scale.

 

The message apparently referred to Thailand's recent election for Prime Minister, where 250 senators from the junta National Council for Peace and Order had the power to elect General Prayut Chan-o-cha to the top government post over more than a million votes from eligible voters.

 

After photos of the pedestal tray spread on social media, Police Colonel Phuwit Siripanit, the superintendent of district Phon Phisai in Nong Khai police station instructed officials to investigate the school and order the students to delete every picture shared on the social media.

 

Later Phuwit said that he instructed police to inspect the school so he would be prepared if high-ranking officials asked him about the matter.

 

“Personally, I think it’s just the attitude of teens towards politics. I see no spiteful things from the students. Also, my subordinates just visited the school, took photos, then sent them to me. I didn't order them to force the students to delete pictures from social media,” he said.

 

Many people shared opinions on the incident. 

 

Assistant professor Sawatree Suksri, the professor of Faculty of Law of Thammasat University commented on Facebook that the students were not at fault and the authorities must react carefully because the students had the right to prosecute them.

 

Teachers' Day is an annual ceremony held in the first Thursday of June, at the beginning of new semester. Every school has to hold the ceremony for the students to pay respect to their teachers and students traditionally create pedestal trays to respect and express their gratitude to teachers. 

 

This year a lot of pedestal trays were designed to express political views.

Prawit claims there was a conspiracy to get school pupils to make political statements in their offerings to teachers. His reasoning was that the pupils can't think. ????????

I am so proud of, and so impressed by, these principled and brave young school pupils who DARE - which most Thai adults do not - to publicly take a stand against an unjust autocracy.

Well done - well done, every last one of you.

You are admirable young heroes - and are doing what Thailand (in its educational briefs) always preaches, but never practises: daring to THINK FOR YOURSELVES and be MORAL!

Kudos to these students. Brilliant. I am worried about police and soldiers turning up to these things even though clearly no laws have been broken. Prayut said he came from the elections. Meaning he’s been voted in via democracy. If that’s the case, these communist style visits must stop. It’s not the job of the state to investigate students expressing their opinions. Those days are ‘allegedly’ over, right?

And that is the difference between a free and fair country and an authoritarian one .. 

Well done those kids, thinking for yourself and having an opinion is wrong think though on animal farm! Clearly a brainwashing failure here.

Quite a climb down. One of those statements is true, but which one? (rhetorical question).

I'm guessing they took the advice of the Imbecile in charge, and read the book "Animal Farm", and came away with a different perspective then he did.

There was one that involved watches! wai kru will probably be banned next year, or they will have to vet them before the giving starts.

Speaking to young Thais, whether they’re anti junta or not, they all have one thing in common - they like social media. Just like in the West many people want to be popular. They want to be seen and/or noticed. Social media is going to play a huge part moving forward here. Question is; who knows their audience and who’s stuck in their ways arrogantly thinking they know best.

Parents idea is my opinion

I know and talk with many educated Thai people in their 20s.  Most are very clear in their opinion that there are a few outdated institutions that Thailand should stop in order for their country to move forward.  Probably can't get more specific than that on here.

Prawit heard there was going to be a human rights watch: "Can I get one with a platinum wrist band?"

Nicely done, showing the truth as it is often offends those who wish to keep it suppressed!

Difficult for the heavies to step into students domain and give them attitude training!

Hope this next generation are going to change a few things.

Strange how government officials can become more upset over this teenage “act” than the thousands of teenagers that get slaughtered or permanently handicapped from motorbike accidents. Government officials seem to turn their heads from this crisis.

Its what i don't get with the Yellow Shirts and Junta supporters.

I read an article about two female politicians (one of them the weird multi coloured hair forensic scientist Pornthip) having a go at a female FF party member.

I'm thinking how can intelligent, educated, modern people not see through this sham?

How could they support something like the above where kids cannot express a political opinion?
