Douglas College – A Second Chance At Success

It is June and you still do not have a university acceptance for this coming September.

Did you miss the application deadline? Was your first-choice university too competitive or expensive? Are you now thinking that you will never get into your preferred university or that you will fall behind while waiting to apply again next year? Don’t despair… there are other options available to you. We will cover these in this article.

Unlike Canadian universities, Douglas College does not have a fixed application deadline. With an open enrolment system, students can apply any time of year. Spaces are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Douglas also offers three intakes per year (Sept, Jan & May) compared to only one (Sept) for universities.

But more importantly, Douglas offers students a second chance to get into a top university of their choice. Let’s face it; the main reason the average student will not getting into their first-choice university is mainly because of supply and demand. With top universities receiving more qualified applications than they can accept, the universities will usually take those students with high marks first, and then work their way down to fill all the spots. If a student does not get accepted, it does not mean that they failed to qualify, but simply that there was no room for them.

But these students do not need to walk away from their dream of graduating from their fav university. There are other ways to get in.

The Canadian college system, unlike college in other countries, provide students with a second chance to get into their top university. Many students take their first or second year at a college before transferring in years 2 or 3 to a university. The reasoning behind this is sound:

Open enrolment allows for last minute decision making or change.

•    Lower entrance requirement (for those of you who had ‘too much’ fun at school)

•    Much smaller class size (35 maximum in most cases compared to several hundred at university) gives students greater access to their professors.

•    Better price: 40%-70% less thank top universities!! I am NOT kidding…

•    More coop programs available = more significant employment opportunity during the summer month and after graduation

•    Flexibility. Earn both college and university credits during years 1 & 2. You then have the option of staying in college and getting an applied degree or transferring over and completing your degree at a university.

You see, being accepted into a university is not the same as graduating. Many students drop out for a variety of reasons.

Students with top marks in high school who never had to work for those marks often are not prepared for the teaching style they will encounter in university or do not have the discipline to succeed. Some will not like the subject they choose so that they will drop out. Others will run out of money so they will take time off to work. Many international students have difficulty with the language or culture, so they return home.

And all of this means that in year 2 and 3, many vacant spaces come up.

The new space availability presents a golden opportunity for college students to transfer over and fill those spots. With substantially less competition in those years (international students rarely move over from their home country in years 2 or 3), the required GPA is often lower.

And with one or two years of previous study experience in Canada, international students will be much stronger in English and therefore better prepare to succeed at the university level.

The chart below outlines the three ways in which a college student can complete a university degree with a 4th option, completing an applied degree at the college.

The province of British Columbia Canada has several top Canadian colleges with a substantial number of students using this pathway to get into top universities like the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, University of Toronto, McGill University, etc.

One of those colleges is Douglas College, located in the greater Vancouver area with campuses in New Westminster and Coquitlam. Located next to a SkyTrain station means downtown Vancouver and the airport are only a short train ride away. They offer 17 degrees and hundreds of university transfer courses which will enable you to transfer into the Canadian university program of your choice.

Tuition for 2019 is CAD 8,700 per semester ($580 x 15 credits), which is well below the price of a top Canadian university and very well priced compared to college or university in other English speaking countries. Students can choose from many co-op programs or work off campus part-time during class and full time during summer breaks.
