I am afraid I don't share your optimism. When the military realise they have gone too far (usually when they massacre protestors) and simply retreat to their barracks for a few years, the power void is filled by venal regional godfathers allied with Sino-Thai industrial tycoons who, as a group, call themselves politicians, who are only slightly better than the military they replaced.

In order to achieve a greater level of freedom, a country requires a civil society with moral courage to push through reforms to address inequities and institutions to implement and enforce them. These are lacking here whilst the patronage system has proved incredibly resilient at resisting the devolution of power and wealth to the population.

You sound a lot like my older brother who has been proved more accurate in his predictions than I,and I fear you will also prove more precise in your predictions it's just that it's such a sad state of affairs and I tend to follow Monty Pythons advise and "always look on the bright side of life"!

You might be right and the junta is not directly responsible. However they are 100% repsonsible for the climate in which such attacks are possible. It is time for them to completely step down, including getting rid of any silly masterplans.

New elections should be scheduled as soon as possible, with the senate being subject to election as well. The EC should be disbanded and replaced by people that are truly impartial. In short, everything they illegally did should be reverted, the 1997 constitution re-instated and Prayuth and Co put on trial.

I can't see them signing that off.
