Taking cash out of Thailand

Featured Replies

Having been in Thailand continuously for nearly 28 years, I have need to return to the UK for a short time on a personal matter.

I do not use a bank as I consider them untrustworthy, so it is cash only for me.

What is the [legal] maximum amount of cash that I can take out of Thailand, [a] in Thai baht, and in UK pounds?

Your help and advice will be appreciated, thank you.

It is 50,000 Baht for taking out Thai currency. I don't think there is a limit taking other currency out, as that is down to the country you are bringing currency in to.

The 50000 baht in Thai bills is correct (they love their old dirty bill it seems ..lol)  Starting from the value of 15000 USD in any foreign currency you are "supposed" to report the money out of Thailand to stay legal.., but no limit , be warned there is a limit for unreported also in U.K. amount .. (XXX ?) , in Europe it is 9999 Euro or starting from 10 000 €   must report , expect sniffer dog control ...

There is no limit for any currency other than Baht.

Convert your Baht into £ at Super Rich. If you are taking the equivalent of US$15,000 or more out, you must declare it on your way out. It is a run of the mill event. Nobody is very interested. The declaration limit used to be US$ 20,000 but I believe it has been reduced.

US$15,000 = approx £11,900

Since the OP is talking about repatriating funds, gold would be problematic.

It’s still the same $20000 and nowhere to declare on the way out . Only on the way in and no one ever checks in Thailand , no sniffer dogs .

Yes and expect some questioning if the amount far exceeds that.

Here's the change (Oct 17) to 15,000 US$. Customs website is not yet updated as far as I can see. No surprise there. In Thai, not English.

Sniffer dogs in Europe not Thailand !! And it changed to 15000 usd from the 20 000 !!

Remember Thailand like to keep your money in Thai banks ….all things start pointing to something ….remember latest Immigration seasoning changes , Thailand like to keep 50% + all year .!!!

Hi.

As of 2 weeks ago, Foreign Currency in cash is unlimited, but amounts over the equivalent of USD $20,000 must be reported on a Foreign Currency Declaration Form to the Thai Customs Department.

Forms are available on the 4th floor (top) at the extreme right as you walk in to the terminal at Suvarnabhum Airport, you must fill in 2 identical copies, they keep one copy, enter details in the ledger book, you keep the other copy to show if required at screening area, the Customs officer has no interest in seeing or counting the cash. Thai Baht limited to 50,000 if flying to Europe or non adjoining Countries. Ive carried large amounts 3 times this year using the above, be sure to also report when you entry destination Country. Hope this helps.

Regards BW.

Like you said they looked not interested, ….or they don't know the latest B.O.T. rules or old forms , in yellow marked in pdf , and I believe you took more …,as they don't know their own rules until the moment they tap on their shoulder to notice it ...

Thai gold is not the same purity as bullion, so I'd expect a substantial discount if I took some overseas. I like it as a currency hedge here.

Here is a man lived in Thailand 28 years & still will not trust a Thai Bank. ????

Come on ????? You must be very lonely

How do you go about your visa extension ?  You must have a very high pillow.

I hope your safe is well concreted in !!!

yep, in Europe they would take some money as they shall claim they need to refine it …...a lie as they have their ways to unmelted sell it again ….. Europe gold trade are thieves …, buy a 18 karat ring and return 1 jhour later same shop and price almost half , not so in Thailand gold shops , good security against a devaluation ..... as you can see why price so much up , from 1350 to this level +/- 2500 in 2 weeks

When you stand there you are anyway reporting and so no problem with more than 15000 usd value ...got it ?? , so why should they take new forms …… but what when they should control at the gate ….. you are toast as not reported ,

As nobody seems to bother see the pdf from B.O.T. I just take here the important quote

All foreign exchange transactions are to be conducted through commercial banks and through authorized non-banks, namely authorized money
changers, authorized money transfer agents, and authorized companies, that are granted foreign exchange licenses by the Minister of Finance. Any
transactions not conducted through the above-mentioned licensees require approval from the Competent Officer on a case by case basis.
c. Currency Regulations
1. Foreign Currency
Foreign currencies can be transferred or brought into Thailand without limit. Any person receiving foreign currencies from abroad is
required to repatriate such funds immediately and sell to an authorized bank or deposit them in a foreign currency account with an
authorized bank within 360 days of receipt, except for foreigners temporarily staying in Thailand for not more than three months,
foreign embassies, international organizations including their staff with diplomatic privileges and immunities, and Thai emigrants who
are permanent residents abroad or working abroad.
Purchase of foreign currency from authorized banks is generally allowed upon submission of documents indicating international trade
and investment. Companies in Thailand can engage in derivatives transactions with authorized banks to hedge against foreign
exchange risk provided that supporting documents indicating future foreign currency receipts or obligations are submitted.
2. Local Currency
There is no limit on the amount of Thai baht bank notes that may be brought into the country. A person traveling to Vietnam, the
People's Republic of China (only Yunnan province) and Thailand's bordering countries is allowed to take out up to THB 2,000,000. A
person traveling to other countries is allowed up to THB 50,000.
Any person bringing into or taking out of Thailand Thai baht bank notes, foreign currency bank notes or negotiable monetary
instruments in an aggregate amount exceeding 450,000 Baht or USD 15,000 or its equivalent must declare to a customs officer.

II. BANK DEPOSITS

That's not the case. And if there was any limit, they would just fix the problem by printing several receipts.

Generally, amounts of 1M and above also "entitle" the customer to personal assistance in the back room (VIP, let's call it), away from the regular crowds.
