UK economy shrinks as Brexit, global worries mount: PMI

The problem that Remainers have caused is that they are blocking/delaying the only credible alternative to May's pathetic surrender treaty, which is leaving on WTO terms. So now we have stalemate, businesses don't know what's happening and investments are being delayed causing the economy to stagnate. Had we left on WTO terms in March as was legislated, most of the upheaval would have settled down by now and everyone would know where they stand and we could move forward. It's the uncertainty that is killing us.

Good to see someone talking sense on here instead of just playground finger-pointing. It's the UNCERTAINTY, stupid.

If businesses knew where they stood and could get on with preparing for a no-deal Brexit (which is what we should have been doing from Day 1 of the negotiations) we could mitigate any adverse effects and get on with our lives. Britons are a resourceful race, we survived for centuries without any help from the EU and will do so again.

Economists are predicting the GBP will fall to below 26 baht over the next 4 years. It seems that many Brexiteers are in denial.

The current state of the UK finances are down to the remainers causing chaos over Brexit. If they'd just accepted the democratic result of the referendum and got behind the country, then we wouldn't be in this mess. It's all down to the remain traitors and that excuse for a manager of the BoE, who isn't even British.

This is all FAKE news but it must feel nice to have someone to blame. The economy is falling because the optimism of the Brexteers is and was totally unfounded.

Did you see any economists predicting the 2008 financial crisis? Or correctly predicting anything else for that matter? No...............didn't think so.

Harry Truman famously complained about these so-called experts: "Somebody find me a one-armed economist".

Remain traitors ? how is it treachery to have a different opinion to a small majority group ?

I would hardly call them even a small majority group. Only 37,5% of the people who could vote voted to leave. This is hardly a majority. 34,6 % voted to remain and the rest didnt vote.

Well it's more than those who voted to Remain. Elections only count the votes of those who voted and as you conceded, 37.5 > 34.6.

On a historically huge turnout, over 1.2 million more people wanted to Leave than Remain. 1.26 million people.

Backed up by a general election where over 80% of voters voted for parties who stood on manifestos promising to respect the vote and Leave.

Then MP's voted to invoke article 50 by 498 to 114. A majority of 384.

Not exactly ambiguous.

Unfortunately more nonsense. It’s the prospect of a no deal on WTO terms, stupid.

Try telling motor manufacturers that they can mitigate any adverse effects of a no deal Brexit? You might want to set up a consultancy and explain to them all how that’s done? Or explain to some farmers how to sell their product with tariffs slapped on to them.

We survived the war? Except for the 55 million around the world who did not.

Dumb just got dumber.

The comments come as no surprise.

After all I am sure the UK's  new slogan must be

Why accomplish in one year when you can procrastinate for six.

What makes these 2 vying for PM think that the EU are going to roll over & get their back scratched. The deal was done ,,, accept or walk away & get on with it

Remainers just don't seem to get it. If you take a no deal brexit of the table the EU has no reason to negotiate in good faith. Like a union who doesn't give their negotiators a strike mandate. Or maybe they do. They are remainers and are doing everything to cripple good faith negotiations. I just don't know.

Do you think the EU negotiators live in a bubble? They don’t read newspapers or watch speeches given by the likes of Johnson and Hunt? A “no deal” Brexit is the end for the Tories, they’ll be out of power within months.

Many Germans loved Hitler, supported him in whatever he wanted to do, right up until the point they were sitting in the rubble of Berlin, surrounded by dead family members, watching their women and children get raped by Russian soldiers. At that point they probably reflected that it wasn’t such a great idea. People will only wake up when they feel the pain of a no deal calamity, and by then the damage is done.

I dont need any credibility to state an opinion. I am not the Governor of the Bank of England making periodic negative statements.

I am not British and my opinion is Brexit is a dumb idea for Britain but good idea for the USA and Europe. I know some british want Brexit and claim the anti Brexit people use scare tactics. Yet I am in banking and no question exists all the major banks are moving substantial people and business out of England to Ireland, USA, France,Germany, Singapore and HK. You may hate banks and investment banks but in reality a good economy needs financial institutions.

Maybe you will enjoy controlling your own borders and being a renegade and maybe it will work out best for you. But the math and economics do not lie. It is a bad business decision for Britain in a very competitive world where a lot of past conquered territories still hold resentment against Great Britain. Much of the treasures in the British museum were stolen. British history is not a thing of beauty.

A little island currency unilaterally deciding to compete against the world —- Makes no sense. Hope the border control is worth it.

Really. Where is your link to this "economic data"? Or did you just make it up?

Next time you pick up a copy of the FT or the WSJ, look for the stories about "the pound vs the baht" or "the USD vs the baht". You'll notice that there aren't any.

99.9% of the world couldn't care less about the Thai baht and how it is performing against major currencies. This idea that "economists" are putting thousands of hours of research into examining the relationship between the pound and the baht is laughable. Very few people not living in Thailand care about the baht at all.

So yes. It looks like you may have invented your claim that "Economists are predicting the GBP will fall to below 26 baht over the next 4 years." Please feel free to show me that I'm wrong.

Who mentioned the war? With apologies to Basil Fawltey, I think you'll find that it wasn't the UK that started it.

Is this relevant to Brexit, as I beleive many other currencies are suffering against the Baht. Example the Aussie $, or Do you beleive their currencies are also suffering, due to Brexit.

To have a different view is one thing. To undermine the Democratic decision of the British people,is something else.

The point is that Brexit and the prospect of no deal adds greatly to GBP’s fall against the Baht, if the decision had been to Remain then GBP would still be lower against the Baht, but at a much higher level than it is today.

Project fear indeed. Pathetic Canadian carpetbagger Carney has been a total waste of time and money. It will take time, but ultimately Britain will do well outside the EU.

The pound only declined against the dollar for a 4 month window in 2016, following the Brexit vote. The baht has been strengthening against other major currencies since mid-2015.

Interesting to see how Brexiters' statements have evolved. Now it is "it will take time". ????

Yes, the use of "ultimately" does allow for indefinite postponement. As in "Jesus will ultimately return."

I'm afraid most people haven't got a clue what WTO tariffs are, or membership or how it works. They preferred to believe Boris, Farage, R-Mogg, Gove etc who all kept saying 'WTO rules' parrot fashion like some holy grail!
