Tokyu Department Store in MBK requires passport if buy 2,000 Baht of groceries

Featured Replies

Today a foreign lady in Tokyu Department Store in MBK (MahBoonKhrong) had to show the checkout lady her passport because she had 2,160 Baht of groceries.  The checkout lady told me it is a Tokyu store policy for a fairly long time now if 2,000 cash or 4,000 credit or more.

Thailand is getting weird.

  • Yes, they stamp the passport with a "Hello Kitty" logo as part of their loyalty scheme. Once you get 10 stamps, you can have a free cup of coffee ????

Having slept on this, now I wonder if they thought you might want a VAT receipt.  I believe two thousand is the level at which a purchase qualifies for tax refund at the airport.  That would be the on

So to buy some of those home appliance electric goods they have at the back of the store costing over 2000 Baht one needs to have identification, it is just a ridiculous rule.

Stupid question.
Just exactly what is the purpose of showing the passport?
What info on the passport is going to satisfy the checkout person?
Do they record your name and passport number?  And where does this info go?  Who sees it?

Why just this store?  Chinese owners?  W-T-F?  555

I hope this becomes SOP.  This is guarantee economic failure.

Everybody and their kangaroo knows you don't have to carry your actual passport, as long as you have a copy of the relevant information and also have access to the original if requested.

Tell her to hold onto an item so that your total is less than 2000 baht. Then after you pay, come back into the line and pay for the remaining item.

Never been asked for ID for paying with cash in a super market, and never will.

If this is real I will need to gather evidence and send it to the western press.

I think in the Big C in our area it's impossible to come over 2'000 baht (Except you buy one big item) as they always stop after 1'000 or 1'500... and start with a new bill, so you can receive an discount voucher from the first one.

But even they would ask for a passport, I not see a reason for that question and never encountered like that before. seems strange

They can ask me all they want as I do not carry it.

Leave the stuff at the checkout and walk away.

Only if it is a big job.

Normally a Thai driving licence will suffice.

Leave all the stuff on the counter and say I'm just going back home to get my passport, keep everything there for me and then don't come back of course.

Occam's razor tells us that would be the reason. Staff are only trying to be helpful.

Telling them that you go home for what? Will only give them an extra laugh about the forgetful 'falang'...

Just leave all the shopping at the checkout and walk away; showing them how ridiculous, stupid, and bad for their business this practice is!

You mean you wouldn't even bother to ask why they would like the passport, in the hope that you could clear up any misunderstanding? Seems like you would cut off your nose to spite your face in this instance. You waste time collecting groceries or whatever, then without spending a couple of minutes to discuss you situation you walk off in a hissy fit with no groceries and all that time lost.

That strikes me as a very odd strategy.

Surely you cannot claim tax back on groceries

The way things is going in Thailand it will not be long until they ask for your grand mother maiden name to buy a beer from 7-11. Life used to be great and uncomplicated before in Thailand before, what went wrong?

additionally; you'd have to lug all your groceries along to the Airport Conter, so that they can acquit all items against the list ???? oh the humanity! all that, by then, melted coconut icecream tubs
