Troops and police have stepped up security in border districts of Songkhla following a warning by an intelligence agency that Muslim insurgents would launch attacks.

Sources from a security agency in southern border provinces said an intelligence agency had learned that a group of insurgents was planning to launch attacks in Songkhla’s Saba Yoi district.

The warning stated that the group aimed to target security checkpoints, financial institutions, convenientce stores, communities, state officials and helpless victims.

Security agencies were warned to tighten checks on vehicles entering the areas and to warn local residents to be cautious.

A source from the Provincial Police Bureau 9 said the bureau radioed all police stations in four southern border districts of Songkhla to join forces with the troops and Provincial Administration Department officials to step up protection of government offices, banks, convenience stores, and security checkpoints and communities from Monday to Wednesday.

This is one of those unfortunate headlines that reflect badly on Songkhla Town. The Saba Yoi district is 80km away down on the border with Yala, within Songkhla province sure, but about as far from Songkhla Town as it's possible to go within the province.
