Progressives Sanders and Warren come under attack in Democratic debate

DETROIT (Reuters) - Progressive candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren came under fire from more moderate rivals as the second round of Democratic debates began on Tuesday, spotlighting the ideological divide in the party's crowded presidential field.

 

Montana Governor Steve Bullock, participating in his first presidential debate, opened by criticizing his fellow candidates for being too liberal in the first debate last month in Miami.

 

"Watching that last debate, folks seemed more concerned about scoring points or outdoing each other with wish-list economics than making sure Americans know we hear their voices and will help their lives," Bullock said.

 

The debate quickly turned to a dispute about the future of the U.S. healthcare system, with Sanders and Warren aligning to defend Medicare for All proposals that would have government take over the health insurance industry.

 

Some of their rivals argued the proposal pushed by the progressives would take private insurance away from people who currently prefer their coverage and force a tax increase on the middle class.

 

"Why do we have to be the party of taking something away from people?" said John Delaney, a former congressman who has been critical of Medicare for All.

 

He argued that Democrats should not back proposals that would eliminate private insurance.

 

"They are running on telling half the country that your health insurance is illegal," Delaney said, pointing to Warren and Sanders.

 

Warren interjected to defend the proposal.

 

"We're not trying to take healthcare away from anyone. That's what Republicans are trying to do."

 

Sanders, who has introduced a Medicare for All bill in the U.S. Senate, said: "Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. I believe that, I will fight for that."

The field of about two dozen candidates is vying for attention and financial support in the race for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in November 2020.

 

AIMING TO MAKE AN IMPACT

Warren and Sanders were in the spotlight as eight rivals, including Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, former congressman Beto O'Rourke and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar shared the stage in Detroit.

 

Lower-tier candidates were aiming to produce the kind of post-debate surge that U.S. Senator Kamala Harris enjoyed after a strong performance in the first debate after confronting front-runner Joe Biden on the issue of race.

 

She and Biden, the former vice president, will renew their rivalry on the second night of the debate on Wednesday.

 

The two nights in Detroit could be the last chance for many contenders to debate on the national stage, as the Democratic National Committee will double its fundraising and polling requirements to qualify for participation in the next debates in September and October.

 

Warren and Sanders, who serve together in the U.S. Senate, appeared on different nights in last month's debates. Warren, the only top-tier contender on stage the first night, emerged with new momentum after going largely unscathed and showing off her array of progressive policy proposals.

 

Sanders was mostly sidelined on the next night, standing placidly by as Biden and Harris leaned across him to spar over race.

 

Warren and Sanders insist they are friends, not rivals, and would not turn on each other for their own political gain.

John made a good point. Its what the GOP has been saying from the get go! The Robin Hood theory of taking from the rich and middle class and sharing it with the poor wouldn't sit well with the swing voters!

no, most democrats are not "marxists" that is why these clowns will not get elected. If a decent realist dem. were running against Trump they would have a good chance but the party has been hijacked by the crazies so we get trump... not too bad, will be interesting to see what his second term is like when he doesn't need to think about getting elected.

I am talking about the over 60% that want healthcare for all and higher taxes for the rich, and the over 80% that want more gun control etc. These are actually very mainstream views, not extremist at all.

As Bernie rightfully pointed out- you can drive from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, Canada some 25 minutes away and purchase medicines at one tenth of the cost of what  they would cost in America.

 

The incestuous relationship between  For profit medical institutions; Big Pharma and Insurance has to end and the Sanders/Warren Healthcare schemes will do just that.  It's not Socialism- it's just simply good policy. 

 

The whole industrralised World has universal healthcare exgept the USA.  Why do Americans have to pay high insurance premiums; go bankrupt from inability to pay  healthcare  bills and die because they cannot afford the treatment or pay for medicine.   The UK, Australia, the EU, Japan, and others do not have these problems. 

 

Donald Trump will not be re-elected simply because he cannot understand the plight of the average  American and has no progressive policies-  He wants to fight with America's allies;  put children into detention and give the rich tax breaks not to mention using race as a divider..  He fears Joe Biden; Bernie Sanders and Eliz Warren because they speak the truth and are perfectly capable of looking Trump in the face and call him what he is- a pathological liar.

 

Trump will slink back to New York after he is defeated and await the knock on the door when he  is indicted for obstruction of justice and the police  say the words- You're under arrest!!!

How refreshing to hear someone actually make sense. As a Canadian who has enjoyed free medical care (btw, our taxes aren't much higher than in the US & and we consistently rank around #1 in country rankings) for my entire life, I find it so odd that so many Americans want to keep the rip off insurance companies in business. If everyone is given free medical care, why would anyone obsess about keeping their wonderful private insurance? Wouldn't it make more sense to cover everyone, and let rich people pay more to speed up the waiting time for elective surgery?  As for free tuition in universities, why not?  If you don't invest in your people first, what sort of country do you expect to end up with.... Oh yeah, that one!! ????

Where in the universe do you find the mandate that Healthcare is a human right?  Is it in the Constitution?  Any law of the land?  Where do you find this slogan, other than the Democrat Party. Even in a Buddhist country like Thailand, you must buy health insurance.  Where does it state doctors, scientists, and nurses after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on their education must work for free?  Because it aint free! I wish socialists like Sanders and his ilk, would would quit calling it Free health care!  You are gonna pay for it with 60% taxes, while they run the economy into the ground. Socialists can't quite make that connection, because democrat voters like the blacks and Hispanics can't pass a 6th grade reading test.  Just look at the inner city youths and their education systems ... but damn tell them it's free and that's all they need to hear.
