ingrown toenail

I suffered with IGTNs for a while with both my big toe nails. I went to a NHS clinic in London a few times where they trimmed the side of the nail and I got temporary relief although it was extremely painful and involved travelling to and from the clinic and sitting around in a waiting room.

An old pal of mine told he he sorted the problem himself years earlier by cutting V shaped slots in the ends of his toe nails with clippers and gently filing the edge where it grows into the flesh with a Black's file available from EBay or Amazon.

The filing fractionally narrows the nail and the V shaped slot encourages the nail to grow away from the flesh by offering it the least line of resistance so it grows towards the middle of the toe.

It worked for him and it's worked for me. You may have to repeat the process every week or two but that's no bother and only takes a few minutes. You can use a triangular file to enlarge the V slot to save you cutting it again after the initial use of the clippers.

Once you start the process the pain will gradually decrease as the nail grows away from the flesh of the toe.

What annoyed me was that the people at the clinic told me not to attempt the procedure when I mentioned it as it would make things worse. I've now realised that they were more concerned about their employment than they were about the considerable discomfort and pain an IGTN can cause their patients.

I haven't done anything special except keeping the nails on the long side once I got through the treatment phase of retraining the nail growth on the sides. I would agree with you if I had to do that for years or for life, but I certainly didn't and it certainly works.

i cringe at the thought of having someone pulling out my toenails, that is a common procedure in torture mind you,

and then proceed to burn the root, and then to top it off charge me a bill for it.

i also dont know where i would go, if that is my last resort

You do get a local anaesthetic, so don't feel a thing, apart from a small prick ( ooo er Missus). If you are a cowardy custard like me you don't need to look and the nurse will mop your brow and hold your hand. Even better if it is a female nurse.

You don’t need to cut out your whole nail, they cut out a sliver of your nail along the side, down to the root, and burn the root.  Then your whole nail is more narrow.  I had it done over thirty years ago, and my nail looks normal, and I never had another problem.

How is it a myth if it worked for my friend and myself.

Few if any podiatrists are going to agree with your performing a simple procedure that takes money out of their pockets.

You're giving me personal anecdotes.
Can you supply even one credible MEDICAL source recommending that?

On the other hand it's easy to find credible MEDICAL sources suggesting self treatment by redirecting the nail growth with physical objects as a possibly effective therapy.

As far as the conspiracy theories that the V isn't mentioned by doctors out of financial self interest. Well, I call B.S. on that because doctors don't make money by people trying the mechanical redirection method either!

It's my impression that if you're in Thailand the medical solution you're going to be offered is complete nail removal. Not narrowing the nails as that's a foot specialist thing and Thailand has almost no foot specialists. If people do go on for nail removal here, ask the doctor if he is going to treat the exposed skin chemically to stop new nail growth or not. I'm not real clear on which you want, but it's important to know what's going to happen.

I am curious if anyone has had this done in Thailand and what the costs were.  Both my big toenails are very curved and can be tender, and the skin has grown very high on the nail making it impossible to cut short.  After reading this thread I am now considering getting them removed, will do more research on the web to see if this is the direction I want to go.

In your case you shouldn't want to cut them too short. That would make it worse. I suggest trying the mechanical redirection method first before considering removal.

Also make sure you get a straight edge cutter not a curved one. Curved ones of for fingers.
