Has anybody noticed movement from the financial residency requirements? And when I say this, I mean people leaving the country. Would like to get insight from people who rent to expats, and curious about location, not only where they were living, but where they're going to.

Few I know have left samui and are going to Spain and Vietnam and are saying far too expensive here now to justify staying !

Spain is cheaper? May be for accomodation and booze.

Is Spain a good country to retire too?

What is the criteria?

I don't see it as a good option if you are a Brit until the Brexit fiasco sorts itself out. Potential to need Schenagan visas.

Spain and Portugal much too cold in the winter. Love Mexico and Brazil, but high crime rate. I'll stick to Asia for the time being.

What cold? Choose your area based upon temperature. No need for Woolies usually, apart from maybe late evening sometimes.

I have seen a couple of people going back to USA... I suspect going back to live w/family due to impending dementia... is this going to be the elephant in the room? larger than visa issues?

I did, that's why I chose Thailand. Spain and Portugal temperatures are mostly below 10C at night from Nov till Mar, and below 20C during the day.

You can't swim in the Mediterranean from Nov till Jun, unless you enjoy cold water. I don't know about the Atlantic coast though, but I think it might be even worse.

We all have different comfort zones,  and personally Chiang Mai weather suits me just fine. Never used the air con at home in 6 years. Just occasionally the fan around Apr-May.

No Ocean or sea in CHiang Mai if swimming is your concern and dictates your comfort zone.

Swimming pools are fine for lap swimming and I prefer outdoor pools. In my younger days I preferred lakes, seas and oceans, as they were better suited for windsurfing. ????
