Thai media has reported that large waves in the monsoon season have caused serious damage to beaches in the popular tourist area of Khao Lak in southern Thailand.

Sanook said that many kilometers of coast had been eroded by the waves as much as 30 meters inland to a depth of 1 to two meters.

Coconut trees and pine trees have toppled over due to damage to root systems and many more are teetering on the brink of collapse.

They said that the beaches of Bang Niang and Nang Thong were particularly affected.

They said that Nang Thong beach is home to 10,000 luxury hotel rooms.

Locals were putting in emergency measures though the sand is expected to return naturally once the monsoon season is over.

Thaivisa notes that areas of Khao Lak in Phangnga province were ravaged in the tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. The nature of the coast was responsible for many deaths in this area in particular.

Waves and erosion do not damage beaches.  Man made structures built close to the water are to blame. The beach will constantly move inland as nature intended. The photo of the building with rocks dumped on the sand illustrates the principle.  Hey stupid people, don't build on the beach.

Not totally true, if you look the beaches in the Netherlands you will see that we found a way to let them grow, by making use of the current.

Don't forget the worldwide rising of the sea-level, the water will make no exception for Thailand.

Only a few cm can have big affects.

Also that they kill the mangrove plants and trees is a huge factor. You could easily let nature be nature and build your structure between the trees and it would work out way better. Don't mess with Nature, this stuff exists like it is for many many years and problems mostly arrive if humans think they are more clever than nature.

Time for a 500 million bt sand bag beach....come to Pattaya and see what a beach rejuvenation disaster really looks like...

What a fool this is, only humans are responsible for deaths due to natural disasters!
Nature has always been there and it will still be when we HUMANS will be extinct!

Well, the resorts that didn't kill their mangrove trees and palm trees weren't damaged much.

The tsunami did not effect everywhere the same depending on the shape of the land both above and under the water. Strictly geography nothing to do with human activity.
