Some 30 fishing trawlers surrounded officials on August 19 as they tried to remove the illegal “Lob Ai Ngo” fishing traps installed in the shallow waters of Laem Talumpuk Bay in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Pak Phanang district, Prayut Thanawattana, kamnan of Tambon Laem Talumpuk, said.

Though some fishermen managed to snatch back a few of the traps, Prayut and volunteers continued to stand their ground in the two-hour confrontation and seized most of the traps. Officials from Marine Police and Nakhon Si Thammarat Fisheries Office could not step in as their larger vessels were unable to access shallow waters.

Prayut said state officials and local administrators will continue fighting unsustainable and illegal fishing practices – which are still used by some fishing communities in the Muang district – will do their best to protect marine life and resources.

and were the owners of the trawlers arrested , no, all talk and little action. Great to see they are removing the traps but the boats should have been seized by the fisheries/police, again we see them backing off instead of making them obey the law, is it any wonder the fishermen have destroyed the thai fisheries with their greed and lack of respect for the law plus the authorities not enforcing the law

The need for the submarines is obvious. Long-distance torpedoes take out the trawlers. Brilliant!
