Dizziness and Vision Issues

It started on Monday and hasn't gotten any better (4 days now). I have no idea what could be causing it. I get a mild temporal headache on the right side, my vision goes double and slightly blurry and I lose all depth perception. If I close my right eye the vision clears but still poor depth perception. I did a medical check for my work permit 3 months ago and the doctor said my blood pressure was normal which for me is not normal. It's always been slightly high but that was while I was drinking 3-4 large Heinekens every day. I stopped drinking back in April mostly out of being bored with it and to save some money. 1 of the teachers I work with suggested it might be low blood pressure which again, for me would be REALLY unusual. I have been going through my yearly stress of getting my marriage visa extension but with all the newly added BS hoops this year plus a brand new immigration office. I still smoke which is 1 factor for a slightly higher blood pressure. I haven't been sick or changed my diet in any way. I turn 60 in Oct. so not really old per say. I haven't gone to a doctor yet because I don't know what kind of doctor to see and I haven't had much free time with work.

Any thoughts or similar experiences to share would be appreciated.

These symptoms are extremely important and should not be ignored. Get to a real hospital immediately and have a competent doctor check you (i.e., do not go to the local clinic). It could be something simple and easily resolved, but it can also be the symptoms of something life threatening.

Warning signs of a stroke?

I thought about that too but 4 days in a row? Is that possible? The doctor told me my heart sounded just fine 3 months ago.

It's worse when I lie in bed on my right side.

My favorite hospital is Samitivej on Sukhumvit 49. BumRunGrad on Sukhumvit 3 is also a good choice. And I have been treated well at Rama 9 Hospital. If you are in the Silom area, Bangkok Christian Hospital is an okay choice for the diagnosis. BCH will be the cheapest of those.

I have no idea where those are but I'll google them. I'm pretty close to Suan Dusit university for work and Bang Son MRTS for living.

Samitivej has a small clinic in China Town. That may be your best option given your location.

I dunno if that’s sarcasm but vertigo is nothing to do with fear of heights it’s to do with problem in ear canal ..lol...yes google is your friend I started suffering with vertigo about 4 years ago it’s horrible you just have to sit still till it passes normally 3 or 4 days,,had it about 3 or 4 times over 2 1/2 years,,,not had it for around 2 1/2 years now.

I would get it checked out.  My father fell, said he was dizzy, had blurred vision.  Only later did we find out they were TIA.  Transient Ischemic Attacks basically mini strokes.  Untreated it led to a major stroke.  If you are dizzy, have a headache, and blurred vision, you certainly have all the symptoms. to be cautious.

I had a health check at Sukumvit Hospital near Ekkamai BTS last week. Part of it was an eye health check, just basic ones but they seemed to have a large eye care department. I was impresed by the place, and it wasn't too expensive. Maybe they have a specialist who could help you.

Ditto:  possible mini-stroke...

Know Your Stroke Symptoms
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arms, or legs, especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden trouble speaking or understanding.
  • Confusion.
  • Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes.
  • Dizziness, loss of balance, or sudden trouble walking.
  • Severe headache with no obvious cause.

You need to see a neurologist immediately.

In your immediate location suggest:

Vichaiyut Hospital   http://www.vichaiyut.co.th/en/en-contact/

one of these doctors:

http://www.vichaiyut.co.th/en/profile_doctor/dr-chaitawat-tienviboon/

http://www.vichaiyut.co.th/en/en-find-a-doctor/

Do not delay. And do not hesitate to go in via the emergency room if things worsen or it proves hard to get an appointment, You need to be evaluated at once.

Apologies, it wasn't meant as sarcasm. I thought it WAS fear of heights. ????  I've had issues with my ears for years and tinnitus for about 30 years. Started back in the good old days in the military when they just discharged you instead of giving you benefits and treatment.

My wife noticed that when I got dizzy and my vision blurred my eyes were bloodshot. When I lie on my right side it's worse and my eyes feel 'loose' and heavy.

I have no vehicle so have been waiting on the wife to have free time to hit the doctor. She works a lot.

I suggest you need to see an ophthalmologist immediately. The symptoms you describe are consistent with glaucoma. If that is the case, then you have a medical emergency - you are going blind. The damage already done cannot be reversed, but the process can be stopped.

Don't wait, not for anything. Get a Grab car, ask a neighbour to drive you, do whatever it takes to get yourself into the eye department of a hospital right now.

Sorry, I should have said why you should suspect glaucoma rather than any of the many other explanations for nausea and impaired vision. It's in that quote. Reddening of the eyes combined with episodes of impaired vision is very suggestive of glaucoma.

My wife has had similar symptoms for 4-5 days. She went to the local private hospital and they kept her in overnight but sent her home. They didn't seem too worried. From what I gather in translation they are talking about an inbalance in water in the brain which I googled and couldn't find much. Sounds a bit crazy. I wonder if there is a virus going around.

Sounds like Meniere's disease or vertigo. In Thai they often refer to it as "uneven levels of water in the ear".

Similar for me. Went to bed and was fine, woke up and was not so fine. It has been lessening for the past 2 days. Only persistent symptom is the temporal ache on/over the right temple.

A clinic doctor didn't seem sure and gave me antibiotics, mostly for the 6yr old (?) cyst that comes and goes over my left shoulder blade. (my wife made him look at it while we were there) Never gave it much thought as it never caused me any discomfort until last week when I thought an alien was growing inside me. It has since reached the surface and has been expelling its contents for the last 4-5 days.

I am grateful for all the advice and will set my sights on a visit to the eye doctor near Mahidol university since I can get there from work fairly easily.

ETA: I did notice a small fleck next to the iris some years back but the eye doctor told me it was normal and nothing to worry about. I only ever wear glasses for reading as I'm slightly far sighted but getting older.

Would be interested in how you go. Her symptoms are lessening. Dr said come back Sunday but didn't seem to know much.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just an update: No insurance means trying homeopathic remedies based on input from "mom" (mil) and the elderly of the village. Cleared up the cyst with these strange gooy patches that drew out all the toxins. The dizzy spells and blurred tunnel vision just went away as did the bloodshot eyes and imbalance.

Still get the occasional spots circling around the peripheral vision area if I cough too hard.

Money or not get yourself to a real doctor in a real hospital and quit trying to find a doctor on Thai Visa.  I hate to be mean but what on earth are you doing trying to get your medical problems solved on a forum?

Your symptoms could be serious.....then you say your wife had the same?  Obviously something going on with eyesight and balance that affects both of you is cause for greater concern than you are showing.  They do have emergency rooms you know.......find one!

Lack of insurance hardly precludes an outpatient consultation with a doctor.

Most of us with insurance have only inpatient cover and pay full costs of outpatient care.

There is a risk this was a neurological event in which case failure to diagnose and treat could lead to more serious problems down the line.

@Sheryl - If this was a neurological event that has past, what are the chances of a correct evaluation based on describing everything to a doctor?

In my family (that I'm aware of) I had a distant cousin with full blown epilepsy and my daughter developed petty-maul epilepsy around the age of 5 and it went away with treatment by the time she was 12.

Other than that, even the smokers in my family lived 80+ years with a few reaching late 90's.

I totally agree with this.

If you are sick and if it's serious go and see a doctor! What's so difficult about understanding that concept?

A consultation is many good hospitals will cost maybe 1000 or max 2000B. Even if you have to pay that yourself is that too much for your health?

And if the doctor tells you it's something serious and it need expensive attention then what? Would you prefer to die instead of using all your money to keep you alive?
