Govt to spend Bt120 million to stimulate tourism

Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said his ministry will spend some Bt120 million to promote and stimulate tourism with the goal of achieving at least 7-per-cent growth this year.

 

Phiphat said the Bt120 million will be spent on stimulus projects and is in addition to the plan to hand out Bt1,000 cash to Thais to spend on tourism, which is a measure of the Finance Ministry.

 

Phiphat said the budget would be spent on at least three measures.

 

One measure focuses on a project dubbed “Bt100 visit to all parts of Thailand”. The project will randomly select 10,000 lucky persons on September 9, October 10, November 11, and December 12 who will be given a tourism package for which they will only be required to pay Bt100.

 

In another measure, the Tourism and Sports Ministry will develop an e-wallet application for tourists to use to spend during their travels and which gives them 15-per-cent cash back.

 

In the third measure, tourists will be encouraged to travel on weekdays instead of weekends and long holidays and receive a range of privileges and discounts, Phiphat said. He said the details of the third measure have yet to be worked out.

 

The minister added that he would continue to push for entry visa exemption for tourists from China and India although the Cabinet has already rejected the idea.

 

He said his ministry is further studying the proposal and will submit it to the Cabinet a second time for consideration. Even the Cabinet rejects the proposal again, Phiphat said, he is confident that tourism will see at least seven per cent growth, which is below than the projection of 9.5 per cent expected by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

 

Phiphat expressed confidence that the goal of having 40 million foreign tourists visiting the kingdom this year would be reached. He said the foreign tourists would spend around Bt3.37 trillion in the kingdom.

 

As part of the tourism promotion measures for foreign visitors, the government would put Thailand forward as an international exhibition hub and try to maintain Thailand’s status as the top tourist destination in Asean. 

 

“I would like to tell foreign tourists that Thailand has returned to full democracy, so they can come back to visit the country again,” Phiphat said, adding that quality tourists from western nations had stopped visiting the kingdom for more than five years.

Considering most people work during the week they will not take up this option and lose wages and or their job .

Constant tourism growth of 5 or 7 or 10% annually is not sustainable. Overcrowding, airport congestion, price hikes, Thai currency appreciation will result. See it already happening. The Country's infrastructure has limits, and it's at it's peak already it seems.

'This year' is already into its third quarter. It will be September soon, Mr. Minister. How are you going to claw back the decline and then grow it by seven percent, in four months? People aren't going to come to Thailand for cashbacks and freebies. Typical knee-jerk and shortsighted tactics from you lot. When are you people going to wake up, face the facts and address fundamental issues that are bringing down tourism in Thailand, the strong baht notwithstanding?

'Full democracy' In any case, the 'quality tourists' from anywhere, not just the west, will not come back for the cashback and discounts. They are getting better deals - and treatment - elsewhere. Try harder.

Let me guess - most would be your friends, or some vaunted e-beggars, who are paid to wax lyrical about the places they visited.

 

Hmm give out 1000b cash to Thais to spend on tourism great idea, should get everything moving again.

The 15% cash back will be well handy, it could be used to put towards visiting national parks etc so that you are only paying 850% more than a local to gain entry to the park.

We'll wait to see about the third measure as it hasn't been worked out yet.

Didn't they try the international exhibition hub thing before?

Full democracy....Brilliant, I'll get on the phone to all my friends that used to come here, and tell them everything is cool now, you can come back... ok Iv'e tried that but they all seem holidaying elsewhere now.

That's true. I also believe that other quality westerners will be leaving the country sometime soon. Can't imagine why! (You know, the ones who spend at least 65000 baht every month).

A quick note to those who responded above.

 

The B120 million ($4 mil USD) is aimed at local tourism not international tourism. They want Somchai and Noi to visit other parts of the country rather than going home to visit the relatives.

 

Given that an international campaign will cost at least several times this outlay with results not seen in the current year, this offers the best bang for the baht.

 

Another way to promote internal tourism is to hold or promote local festivals and concerts. These events will attract folk from neighbouring provinces to come along and spend money, which is the object of this exersize. It will make TAT happy with better numbers and will inject money into some local communities, but on a bigger picture it is still the same large pot being shared out differently.

There's an Hospital down the road needs some new machines, oh well forget it

It may be of help to clean the place up first with some decent basic infrastructure before more masses of Chinese & Indians come to google at the dirty place not even spending anything.

Please note : excludes transport, accommodation, food and drink, excursions and any other thing that may cost actual money
