Trump Iran photo tweet raises worries about disclosure of U.S. surveillance secrets

I seem to recall that when he was electioneering, he said something to the effect of “don’t tell the enemy your plans (secrets, whatever)”.

But now he seems to tell all!

All part of brag I guess.

Does anybody else recall this?

More than once.

I cannot understand a noise being made about a satellite photo. You can get almost the same images from google earth. Come on Iran has a missile program and has uttered threats against the US and the west. It'd be moronic to think a satellite isn't stationed above the area. Russia has them around the world China, Israel etc have them. All the communication sats put into orbit aren't for telephone use only. Optics have improved tremendously. Just another jab at Trump when most folks with two or more working brain cells have this already figured out

Knowing that there's a satellite, and being made fully aware of it's capabilities are two different things. Could be wrong, but I don't recall many (or even any) instances of material of this level being publicly released, when it serves no national security purpose to do so.

I don't think that being made aware of surveillance will make Iran give up its various efforts and projects, but rather invest more heavily in camouflaging and hiding them.

A satellite image shows what U.S. officials say is the failed Iranian rocket launch at the Imam Khomeini Space Center in northern Iran August 29, 2019.

There were several satellite photos of this launch, two by commercial satellites and one by U.S. intelligence satellite. This picture is from a commercial satellite. This is what Trump tweeted:

image.png.e61c283a320d64de76ad7da27fc5e944.png

According to amateur satellite watchers, this photo has a resolution of about 10cm. But they identified the satellite as most probably the U.S. Keyhole satellite USA224 that has a resolution of 2.4cm. Commercial satellites can get 30cm.

Note the black rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the picture released by Trump. It appears to be a redaction which means some security measures have been taken on the released photo.

Also there appears to be a camera flash in the center of the photo that implies the photo is a photo of a photo, ie., i-Phone camera, that would lose the original satellite resolution, ie., from 2.4cm to 10cm.

The importance to release of this picture is it reveals (if unknown by Iran) not only the time photo was taken but the angle and orbital height of the satellite. In the future the satellite can be predicted for any overflight of Iran.

It was reported that the explosion was not due to the missile itself but rather some ground fault such as fueling or electrical fault in preparation of a launch. As such that might be a deliberate plan to see if and what the U.S. might detect.

On the plus side, there not using cartoons to convey complex information to trump, yet.

It does look like trump used his phone to take a picture of the photograph.

Amateur astronomers have re-created the shot and traced it to USA-224, one of many KH-11 satellites.

It would probably be best if trump didn't declassify and publish such information, but he probably couldn't resist.

His tweet reminded me of a 5th grader, but trumeprs seem to think he's playing 5D chess.

He could have conveyed knowledge of the incident, along with his faux concern, without releasing the photo. In fact, this might have kept Iran a bit off guard.

But like he says, he's president and he can do anyhting he wants.

this was just DRT's way of telling them that they can run, but they cannot hide...

anyways they aren't that dumb, as to strike directly at the US; but their future dreams of thwarting Jews in Space, are now on the table...

(it is not the missile's pointy end target that is to be worried about... but the highly likely outcome, of the entire archipelago being irradiated by some future failed nuke launch...)

Another Trump headline..ha. Who actually thinks he is a great president? Oh I know..the very wealthy and the Evangelical Christians. Some in denial also.. ????

Perhaps, in his usual clueless, incompetent manner. He really should leave stuff like this to the grownups.

"...Jews in Space..."

LOL, don's write things like that or you'll have the whole tinfoil hat brigade PM'ing you for details about this latest conspiracy.

Don't forget those who dream the unattainable but alluring MAWA dream.

Your argument is backwards.

Amateur satellite watchers identified the satellite because they already know where these satellites are, it's easy, using their backyard telescopes, they said1. They can also calculate exactly when it is over Iran (or anywhere else) wIthout an image. But even that isn't needed because secret spy satellite USA-224's live orbital positions are posted realtime on the Internet.  Here: https://www.heavens-above.com/orbit.aspx?satid=37348

As does my Aviation GPS.  It also knows where they are and is available to anyone with one-thousand Dollars.

Whatever...I do find the Donald sometimes going a bit far but also amusing...and will not follow the never ending Hollywood millionaires trend,  calling to boycott Trump...previous presidents were far worse, behind the worlds backs.

Regarding the president's tweets...I know, it looks like an Onion article, it isn't.

JPMorgan Launches "Volfefe Index" To Track Impact Of Trump's Tweets On Market Volatility

Some time in the past 3 years, US capital markets - already rigged and broken beyond comprehension by central banks and HFTs - crossed over into the realm of absurdity, but it wasn't until this Friday that we got official confirmation. That's when JPMorgan came up with the "Volfefe Index" (remember Covfefe) to quantify Trump's impact on rate volatility.

When it comes to Trump's tweeting habit, there are two approaches. One can ignore them, as Asia is increasingly doing, or one can obsess over them and use them as the springboard for violent daily market reversals.
