One very important contributory factor they didn’t mention is that a high percentage of vehicles have ridiculous black windows which must increase the accident rate significantly. Drivers with black windows cannot see properly at night and/or when it rains. Other drivers cannot see facial expressions of drivers behind black windows to help determine their intentions at junctions. Drivers behind cannot see impending hazards through the black windows of the car in front. The dangers of driving with black windows are magnified with older drivers, whose pupils no longer dilate so much to adapt to darker conditions and those with cataracts which in most Thais are left untreated.

 

In line with most developed countries Thailand actually has a law prohibiting black windows but Thai police choose not to enforce it.

I am constantly amazed when people think that Thailand has a rule of law or that the police operate as they do in the West.

Thailand has very strict laws, the biggest problem is the lack of people willing to enforce them!

Huuuh - one of the main reasons escaping a well known Nanny and Police State was the ruthless enforcement of a myriad of very strict laws incl. being fined for forgetting to turn off your indicators or government officers legally entitled taking possession of your property for failure to pay the fine for not voting.

BTW - laws impacting the lives of long-term foreigners are being enforced to varying degrees in one area - Immigration laws

When it comes to road carnage nothing will change until police are on the road with the proper equipment and attitudes to stop and either ticket or arrest law breaking drivers.  It will take cars and motorcycles with lights, loud speakers and sirens and then of course, drivers who will understand and comply when police indicate that they are to pull over safely and s top to face the reason police stopped them.  Token fines will do nothing.  Fines that get their attention and hurt their pockets may eventually lead to an understanding of what it means and how to operate a motor vehicle safely and in accordance with the rules made for the safety of everyone.

I get the feeling Thailand is fashioning itself into something out of the hunger games. It derives certain goods from each province in an unbalanced and unequitable manner. The city with it's rail systems and high rises so far removed from the unwashed and desperate population. The two groups share a language, little else. All the frivolity and decadence in the big mango. The hardscrabble life of the plebs and illiterate bumpkins. The deck is stacked so horribly against them that even with decent schools most could never navigate their way out of their rural and hapless circumstances.

Laws in this country!!!. Yesterday saw two coppers on bike, driver had helmet. His mate on pillion seat NO HELMET. THEY JUST DROVE OFF DOWN beach road jomtien
