Thailand’s high-speed railway will carry first passengers in 2023

The first section of the 873 kilometre high-speed railway running between Thailand and China should be operating by 2023.

Thailand will now pay for the total cost of the 179 billion baht first section of the high speed rail line, but China is providing the design and will provide the train and carriages. The first 252 kilometre leg, from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, in the north east, is set to carry its first passengers in 2023.

The project is part of China’s planned network of high speed rail links across south east Asia that will eventually connect Kunming in south western China with Singapore. The second section of the line will connect Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai on the Laos border, through Laos and then to China.

The acting Governor State Railway of Thailand announced yesterday that the contracts are currently being finalised and will be signed before the end of the year. The project was delayed in 2016 when Thailand rejected Chinese financing citing high interest rates in the original contracts.

Contracts are also being finalised for the proposed high speed rail links between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in Bangkok, and U-Tapao near Pattaya.

The trains will run at speeds up to 250 kph.

Visa  runners will have another option to take train from Laos to Bangkok

They are currently recruiting white van drivers to drive them and the speed limiters will be overridden to boost top speed to 300Kph.

Seriously will we ever hear these train whistles blow? Are these trains really required?

China rules everything and the  "General" is selling Thailand step by step to China. How much debt Thailand has now outstanding to China. Nobody knows but I assume it's also bigger then the household debt of all Thai. So what I see Thailand will be broke soon or am I just kidding 555.

It took over 4 years to build a tunnel in Phuket which is only 350 meter's

Later we can all read about out of control pickup travels at 250kph stuck to front of train before flying off taking out a 10 story apartment block????

At least that is years before Britain's HS2, if that goes forward at all.

What happened to HS 1?

Just found out, it's the Channel Tunnel link from London/Kent.

No problem finding drivers to go that speed

The "High Speed Railway" to Chiang Mai has gone rather quiet...

Mind you, they have been planning a metre gauge branch line off the Northern Line (Bangkok to Chiang Mai) to serve Chiang Rai since the 1930s!

And that took 13 years to build!

Without them the project, part of China’s planned network of high speed rail links across south east Asia that will eventually connect Kunming in south western China with Singapore, will not exist, so, yes, they are really needed.

Don't be a pessimist. Ticket prices have been set and tickets printed. Everything is set to go.

Small details like finalising contracts, arranging finance, recruiting a skilled workforce and building a railway line and commissioning the trains can be done any time according to the wish and command of the PM.

The skytrain slow speed 12 km line from Mo Chit to the Air Force Academy just past Saphan Mai has been under construction now for at least 4 years; and it's still not open.

At that rate of construction this 252 leg from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasimawill not be opening any time before 2060. Get your tickets early to avoid the rush.

When the maiden voyage from Bangkok to Nong Khai will take place is anybody's guess.

The SRT will be involved so there is every chance it might end up like this.

So much more important rubbish to do first. My guess is the future farang hospital bills will pay for this????

Well, for all the Thai bashers.

Check out the latest delays, over budget and other problems on the UK HS train.

????????

Bangkok to Khorat, twice a day, 3,000 baht. Yippee.

Believe 2032 maybe, 2023. Puhleeze.

love your essay....many things you say are correct......love it...

According to the Thai finance ministry, 80 per cent of these loans are denominated in Thai baht, with China only providing technical training for personnel who will operate the high-speed rail system.

Construction for this phase is roughly half finished; it began in late 2017, after Thailand resisted heavy pressure from China for more financial, commercial and operational control of the project.

If this is true, it is really good news. Anything that can be done to resist the CPC's desire for world domination, is a good thing. The rails are a great idea, but without Chinese debt.

Oh buugger! That means the 15 months that was originally left (our glorious leader stated back in 2017, see below), has now been extended to 39 months left to build 250kms of track and and get it up and running.

That must mean that in another two years he will extend the completion date again by a further two years - ad infinitum.

Does he think most of the population don't have memories going back more than a week?

Or perhaps he knows no one listens to what he says, or even believe him.

Just how can you call me cynical?

Anything over 55k an hour would be high sped here

Check out JR trains in Japan which is somewhat nearer. They made a public apology when a train was not on time- it left 20 seconds early!
