Have the government lost control of the police in Thailand?

Featured Replies

Based on my experience over the last 10 years, i've come to the conclusion that the government has no real effective control over the boys in brown.

On one hand i feel the police should be paid far more money but the corruption should not go unpunished which is currently the case because they are simply "transferred to an inactive post". What a joke!

They really are the mafia as they collect payments from bars, road blocks and other money generating schemes not unlike the mafia.

Recently the government released figures stating 45% of money collected from on the spot fines goes directly in the police mans pockets.

To make things worse, laws are not enforced because payments are made including :

1. Bars who allow smoking

2. Construction companies burning off hazardous materials at night ( so you can't take clear videos/photos ) The World Health Organization reports, 25% of the entire countries population die prematurely due to pollution including long term expats.

3. Vehicle pollution. Recently the police in Bangkok found over 10,000 vehicles producing pollution however none where removed from the road and only a handful fined.

The government and police clearly DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONES HEALTH.

Army and police are two rival gangs.

Current government is army, police can do what they like.

Thaksin was police, army could do what they wanted.

I reckon "they" have power over the leaders, probably enough evidence to stop them trying to clean up Thailand.

Remember when the army was going to stop corruption?

Not a police job, at least not in a real country, job of the regulatory offices, which may not even exist here?
Same people who control food safety, building safety etc...

But the rest, yeah sure... but everywhere in SEA, Singapore might be an exception.

police vs army is like the cosa nostra vs the ndrenghta or camorra in italy.

Before all major holidays in Thailand, the police need to fill up the party box.
Therefore, there are many checks before the holidays ..

Yes sadly that is in fact the case the same as the Government usually also has no control of the Military

This goes a long way to explaining all the coups in Thailand (19th just completed)

Think back to even the most recent coup of 2014

At that time the Yellow vs Red factions were fighting as usual.....

The government was trying to hold elections as & the mobs basically were overrunning  everything

including government house (offices of Prime Minister picture you posted) This was not a first as the same happened under Abhisit Vejjajiva time

remember the ASEAN Summit? Overrun with

protestors...no cops no military protection for a Thai elected government? Imagine how Thailand looked to ASEAN at that moment?

Same as always lawless self serving etc etc

Were were the police? More importantly in this situation where were the Military?

They were standing aside to help create total chaos then giving them the once again used excuse of needing to step in & take over the country from a democratically elected government

This problem comes again & again in Thailand's flawed history

No government can survive if its two main arms of Police & Military are treasonous to further their own gains.

This is just the tip of the iceberg

The populace having seen this over & over in Thailand's history of course is infected with a "me too" attitude.

After all they see this corruption at the highest possible levels & they see it enriches those treasonous corrupt individuals

& they aspire to that..........Why not? Lead by example is a common thing all over the world

So when the little people see this do they not also want to stick their snouts in the trough...any trough??

So yes all true & sad too because the Thai really deserve better leaders, better examples...They NEED a Hero

I disagree and do not or have not experiences that in 20 years, if you conduct yourself patiently in the correct way there's no problem.

Click your heels three times and say "There's no place like home."
