Just reporting the TM30 experience...

My 1 year extension based on retirement visa went smoothly...

Then off to the 90 day reporting desk to re-new for next 90 days...been staying in same home for more than a year...no changes...no problem, right?

Well, seems since home owner actually lives in Germany and her mother takes care of her home...we now need a pic ID and signature from Germany...after lots of telephone convervations received IO required ID signed and printed out...

Off to immigration to complete new requirement...but NO!  Now we need a power-of-attorney giving mom permission to handle the German daughter's business...it MUST be an original document..a copy will not do...and, IO wants me to get mom to travel for hours from her province to my home to execute a new rental agreement that satisfies the IO...smiling at the absurdity of the demands to renew the 90 day report, I replied: "no problem"...555.

Went to law office near my village...a phone call to immigration...seems 800 baht can resolve the problem...plus 300 for legal services...had my 90 day reporting stapled in my passport within the hour...

Angry, bitter at obvious harassment...not really...this is Thailand...one must learn to work within the system...????

Congrats, you are a flexible guy, no doubt. But many aren´t. and they end up in big  problems here because of these <deleted> immigration officials... Sorry to say and sorry for Thailand, they all do more harm than good for their country. And they do not even understand that...

Glad you got it fixed, but it's certainly harassment. The system had been consistent and reasonable for many years, but the current bunch of despots are deliberately using long dormant laws to make life as hard as possible for long stayers here. Shrugging it off is the Thai way, but such passivity also explains many of the problems the country continues to deal with.

You did right to keep your cool (also the Thai way, and one of the more admirable traits here), but it's still institutionalised harassment which ever way one looks at it. No shame in calling it for what it is.

Ah, yes.  When I got married 41 years ago, I had to have a Thai vouch for my good intentions up in Loei.  I took my very old and somewhat infirm landlord to the office in a samlor.

Holy cow!  He had been the superintendent of education for the whole province or thereabouts.  Seemed like everyone knew him (probably related) and they started Wai-ing and apologizing for having bothered him.  The rubber stamps were smoking as they stamped the paperwork. The old man liked me and I liked him.  I rented a small wooden house in his back yard and he let me park my motorcycle in his shed, lest it get stolen.  I still converse with one of his daughters on Facebook now and again.  The old days were good.

TM 30 problems aside, what happens when you have a problem with your rental home?

Fix it yourself or have it fixed and they pay the bill through bank transfer?

Glad you kept your cool and got it done.

Hope I can find a lawyer to handle a transaction for 300 baht if I run into trouble with the IO.

That part seems like a bargain.

And the PoA requires tax stamps, although this may not be enforced?

I'm a bit confused... you mentioned the 90 day report then delve into what appears to be the TM30 experience. Assume you have never filed a TM30, and that you were prevented from filing a TM47 (90 day report) until you compelted the TM30?

I was told by my condo manager yesterday as we argued ''I need to take time to understand thais''...sadly this is the mentality, we matter very little...its all about them

When bribery takes place, there are 2 persons involved: the one who gives it and the one who takes it. Both are criminals.

In your case, the officer got rewarded for scamming you.

Why is bribery so common here? Because it is widely accepted and hardly pursued. And because of the giver feels that it is easier for him and quicker to go that route. That sets an immense goal for the officials to make things more slowly, more complicated, even unavailable, it there is no money coming to them. So finally, with every single act of this kind the bribery becomes more prevelant.

That can be reduced by people that stand up and do not pay, but even complain as well on the official way an well as in public. But that is the hard way to go. I know I am dreaming.

I got such a good deal on the rent that I have been fixing the problems myself...have an older Thai gentleman that comes over on his small honda MC with bag of tools to fix any plumbing or electrical I am reluctant to tackle...he usually  charges 150-300 baht per occurrence...very friendly, polite, and does good work.  A keeper!  555

It could also be called a facilitation fee or fast track fee like in passport applications one can wait 2 weeks or pay the fast track fee and get it in 3 days as is the case in OZ.

Shure, that is what 99.5 % of the people do, resort to practical means for themself, and that is why the country will not change to the better. How many people are needed for a change? 20 % %

OK sport, tell us how you in your infinite armchair wisdom would have handled it differently?  ????

You did what you felt you had to do to get things done. That's your prerogative. But don't celebrate this.

Thais keep cool until they don't and then watch out. Have you never watched a Thai soap opera?

I would not base my perceptions on those!

No reason to get pertly. - I dont blame you. It is just the way post No. 18 said: You did what you felt had to be done, but do not celebrate this.

There is a dozen way to handle it differently, but if you do not know and will not do, its meaningless to tell you.  I admit you took the easiest way.

What I am more interested to hear than successfull bribe stories are those when somebody resist to it and how it worked out.

That’s weird, we needed the same request.

They wanted the landlord to come to the office and sign, and a quick phone call where he told immigration in no uncertain terms was he traveling on an 8 hour return trip as my visa was none of his business, all he did was rent the house.

There was an upcoming Chinese festival and he would be in town for a family dinner, they gave us a form for him to complete, we already had a copy of his ID, we gave the form to his brother, when we picked it up, the signature obviously wasnt the same as the ID photocopy, his brother said “oh, I’m authorized, i own part shares in the house” ( probably true, Chinese business-orientated family owned property) he wouldnt listen to my pleas that this was immigration we were dealing with and I reluctantly accepted the paper expecting the worse.

I presented the paper with my documents for Non-O year extension, they looked “is this the same pers..?.” “YES” .. Okkkay no problem and there wasn’t.

Oxygen thieves and paper wasters

It could have gone and may go a different way in the future - there may be a time in the future where landlords refuse to rent to westerners if this continues.

Judging by most posts on Thai Visa, including yours, everyone in Thailand should prioritize farang issues before all else.

Farangs are at the mercy of immigration and Thai people to obtain needed visas and other mandatory reporting and documentation.  Farangs come to Thailand on good faith that their trust in investing millions of baht in real estate and businesses...keeping large amounts in low interest Thai Bank Accounts, supporting families with children and elderly parents would be met at least half way when requiring Thai peoples assistance to meet immigrations asinine demands.  Is that too much to ask you think?  ????

You will of course inform us of the visiting times????

Unless you are the owner of the place where you are staying, you do not need to do a TM30.

However, when you are visiting your provincial IO for an extension of stay, you need to ensure that the place where you are currently residing has done a TM30 otherwise you risk that your extension of stay will be denied.

I do travel a bit so with a Thai Landlord who refuses to sign & submit the forms it will be interesting next year for my extension. Been in apartment 14 years

Bribery is often, quicker, easier and cheaper. Hence handing over money to police after being stopped for a fake traffic violation. I was stopped once and procrastinated for so long he gave up and went after someone else.

I suggest that you check out the TVF in the weeks before your extension is due, and enquire whether TM30 is actually enforced by your provincial IO.  Since the provincial immigration offices are now required to follow a checklist that includes TM30 compliance, for approving extensions of stay, chances are very slim your extension will be approved when no TM30 has been filed of your current residence on the day of your application.

Some TV-members suggested therefore to take a hotel the day before visiting the provincial IO, so that your TM30 is filed.  However, you would need to stay at the Hotel also the day of your visit, otherwise you will be 'checked out' on the day of your visit.  But not sure whether that would indeed work if the rest of your TM30 history for the past year was blank.
