Somkid pushes for resumption of FTA talks with EU

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak is wooing the EU to revive talks on a Thai-EU free trade agreement after the next round of talks in October.

He has also asked the EU to help convince Airbus to invest in an aircraft repair centre in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

Somkid said after meeting with EU diplomat Pirkka Tapiola on September 12 that he had been informed the EU is ready to negotiate an FTA with Thailand once again. FTA talks stopped in 2014 due to the military coup that year and a military-backed government running the country until elections this year.

Now that Thailand has a democratically-elected government, talks are expected to resume after October, Somkid said.

“The EU is ready to negotiate with Thailand and they say we are their first priority as we now have an elected government,” Somkid said. “The negotiations should not take much time and apart from the FTA there is also interest in other bilateral agreements.”

Somkid said Tapiola expressed the EU's interest in nvesting in the EEC for production and export facilities.

He also met with Damien O’Connor, New Zealand’s Minister for Agriculture, Biosecurity, Food Safety, and Rural Communities, and Associate Minister for Trade and Export Growth, on September 11. They discussed about the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) as well as partnerships in other fields such as education, science and technology.

Let's see this first, EU is not that stupid and knows what's going on in this country and for sure it has nothing to do with a democratically-elected government and they know it's total something else ( none of the parliaments in Europe don't have all billionaires as mp's hahaha)

Interesting photo.

When the Thais take photos, they all seem to come out pearly white.

When their photos are taken outside Thailand, they all look much less so.

Image distortion is a mental illness that most of Thailand suffers from.

The EU would be well aware the current government is still the same old junta with the same old leader trying to disguise itself as a democracy.

One of the things the EU doesn't like about Thailand is it's human rights record. This story yesterday about human trafficking and unpaid wages won't help their cause.........nor should it.

Won't they ever learn.

They only thing they'll ever learn is to suppress the media, in order to prevent stories like this getting out so often.

This seems to confirm that Somkid has been downgraded to the position of Marketing Manager EEC.

Wonder what he did to get up the nose of the PM. I doubt it took much whatever it was.

What has the EU trading with China got to do with this Free Trade Agreement story?

China, like many countries, might trade with EU but it does NOT have an FTA.

The story if you read it again is about Free Trade Agreements and Thailand trying to get one with the EU.

If you want to sing a long please keep in tune.

Below is a link which defines Free Trade Agreements.

In the absence of an FTA, 164 countries use the World Trade Organization rules.

They may well do but Thailand didn't worry about FTA rules when Prayut with his Article 44 dispossessed Australian company Kingsgate of their goldmine.

Trade rules of any description counted for nought when Prayut used his Article 44.
