Bercow promises 'creativity' to ensure PM Johnson obeys Brexit delay law

LONDON (Reuters) - House of Commons speaker John Bercow has promised to use “creativity” to ensure Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not ignore a law which would prevent him taking Britain out of the European Union without a deal at the end of October.

Johnson has vowed to deliver Brexit on Oct. 31, with or without a deal, and has said he will not request a delay to that deadline, despite the legal requirement to do so if he has not secured parliament’s approval for an exit agreement.

Bercow, who has been accused by the government of breaking parliamentary rules to help lawmakers try to force a delay to Britain’s exit from the EU, said it was “astonishing” that anyone was entertaining the idea of not obeying the law.

“If we come close to being there I would imagine that parliament would want to cut off such a possibility and to do so forcefully,” he said in a lecture to lawyers late on Thursday.

“If that demands additional procedural creativity in order to come to pass it is a racing certainty that this will happen and that neither the limitations of the existing rulebook nor the ticking of the clock will stop it doing so.”

Bercow, who said this week he would step down as speaker of parliament’s lower chamber next month after more than 10 years in the role, said Brexit would only come in a form endorsed by lawmakers. He said that not following the law would set a terrible example to society.

“One should no more refuse to request an extension of Article 50 because of what one might regard as the noble end of departing from the EU as soon as possible, than one could possibly excuse robbing a bank on the basis that the cash stolen would be donated to a charitable cause immediately afterwards,” he said.

These are not normal times.

We have one of the most contentious issues in modern times to face us in the UK, with social media delivering unedited news in real time.

We also have a very rare situation where the Government does not have a majority in the house of commons and even less on it's willingness to crash out of the EU without a deal on Brexit.

Even more the PM and Government have shown contempt for the house by ignoring it's wishes, what Bercow has done is to allow the house to have the opportunity to put their own bills and vote on them.

It is known that Bercow has views on Brexit, name me an MP who has not? certainly not the leader of the house which is a government appointed post and if there were a vote of no confidence in the leader of the house tomorrow he (JRM) would surly lose where as the Speaker is an elected position and was elected in 2009, and since then been re-elected unopposed after every general election since, and would surly win if there were an vote of confidence in him called in the sitting of this parliament.

Bercow is a disgrace. Should have been fired a long time ago.

Why? I quite enjoy the theatrics. Reminding me of a brawl between 5 year olds...

Bercow is certainly marmite, some love him and some hate him.  Interesting all in the house, every party, stood with a standing ovation for him apart from the front bench of the Tories who were instructed to stay seated (I assume).

Playground antics at their very best.

It needs the Leavers to use some creativity too. The Guy Fawkes option would be my favourite.

I take it that you are aware what happened to him, although admittedly he got off quite lightly in the end compared to what they had in mind for him.

You mean they should be burnt at the stake, and then, every October 31st, their effigies should also be?  Seems a bit harsh.  Still, penny for the Boris?

Yes making a "Boris" rather than a "Guy" would be a piece of cake.  A sack of rotting potatoes and a mop head should do it.

quote "Even more the PM and Government have shown contempt for the house by ignoring it's wishes, what Bercow has done is to allow the house to have the opportunity to put their own bills and vote on them."

Yet the 650 MPs have shown far greater contempt for the country by ignoring the wishes of the electorate. They have promised to take the UK out of the EU and broken that promise many times. The majority that I see of the podcasts are far more childish than kindergarten students and TBH there aren't more than perhaps 10% who care what they are doing to the UK.

They appear to believe that being elected makes them superior in many ways than the people who elected them

IMHO hopefully 20, 30 or perhaps 40% of them from ALL parties will be de-selected at the main party level and at the local party level and a new fresher younger set brought in to replace them.

Congratulations for winning 17.4 million votes in a manipulated opinion poll. Too bad it’s a paper tiger worth nothing. But keep celebrating. At least until the next extension.

Yes, it would have been higher in favour of leave, had it not been manipulated by the Remain establishment.

I think we all, leavers and remainers, can get behind that one.
