Contact the rental company you intend to use and check. My Thai licence was fine to use in Australia. I also checked ahead of time.  No IDP needed. My first Thai licence was in Thai and needed an official translation of it to rent a car.

    Thai driving is not exactly globally recognised as being of high standard.

    I have rented and driven cars in many states and never had an issue using my Thai licence.    Often my Thai girlfriend has been on the rental as a second driver. Again, no problem at all.
