PM floats idea of moving capital

Citing overcrowded conditions in Bangkok, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has said moving the capital is a possibility.

He made the comment at the seminar “Connecting Thailand with the World”, hosted by the Office of the National Economics and Social Development Council in Muang Thong Thani on Wednesday (September 18), and also vowed to extend the registration deadline for low-income earners to receive state welfare.

“There are two possible approaches to moving the capital,” Prayut said. “The first is finding a city that’s neither too far nor too expensive to move to. The second is to decentralise the urban area to outer Bangkok to reduce crowding.”

The second approach would preserve Bangkok’s important landmarks, he said, while government and business facilities could be relocated to the city’s perimeter, reducing the need for so many people to travel in and out of the city centre and thus easing traffic jams.

Moving the capital is just an idea and would require extensive research as to the economic and social impacts, Prayut said, but it is a possibility under his administration.

“Past governments were never able to pull this off, fearing it would cause irreparable conflict in society,” he said. “The first priority now is to establish mutual understanding among the people to make sure they and the government are on the same page.”

Earlier this year Indonesia’s president announced that the capital of the world’s fourth-most populous country will be moved from Jakarta on the crowded main island of Java, though no new location has been chosen.

Prayut also said at the seminar 14.6 million citizens had registered as low-income earners eligible for state welfare, though he believes the number should be higher.

“Some people missed the registration deadline, so the government will extend it indefinitely to make sure no one is left behind,” he said.

Just a suggestion......Pattani or Narathiwat!

I thought when he came up for air after the last flood  he agreed the capital should be moved ASAP.

PM floats idea of moving capital.

One wonders if "floats" is the operative word, ie. flooding sinking etc :w00t:

One also wonders if the fortune teller has anything to do with it.

If it sinks, it could be the world's largest submarine maintenance centre.

If they all succumb to the rising sea levels, they could become centres for the more traditional sort of diving.

Alternatively a load of these went up for sale recently .. but given the turf wars that go on amongst the present taxi industry maybe there will be duck wars in the sunken BKK of the future if they get some ..

This is not true.... They have already chosen a location.....and have already began to build roads...the precise location is kept under wraps..

Plenty of threads with such information on TVF, The Philippines seem to offer cities  that are less expensive.also close enough, though crime might be high, Also many locations in Mexico sound promising.

And the new yet unfinished railway station for the high speed train and the yet unfinished extensions to the BTS ,another new airport?

So, how about going back to Ayutthaya ,back in the 17th C that was the Thai capital until the Burmese invaded and it got all moved to Bangkok ,and if the Burmese invade again LOS will be well ready ,with all the new Submarines ,tanks and the new Chines amphibious vessels ................what could go wrong.

interesting the parallel to jakarta is drawn, however myanmar, with its many parallels and similar policies to the current thai government is omitted.

I have asked about this over the years as Bangkok is sinking much like other major cities in Asia. China has the same problem and they have banned people from drawing ground water in certain cities. Also adding all that concrete does not help by adding so much weight to the surface. There was talk about moving North to Ayutthaya but that was many years ago to get out of the valley that Bangkok is located in.

Nobody I have ever met has thought it possible as you needs loads of money and some people would not like the idea of downgrading Bangkok to a lesser city and lower the value of their property investments. Time will tell but this is the first time that I know of that someone of note has brought it up.

This time the Chinese will invade and zap all the hardware with the big remote control from the mothership, rendering it totally useless.

You may have noticed I mentioned fortune tellers, although I didn't mention Myanmar by name. I thought people would get the connection.

Yes Indonesia is moving its capital, deal done according to the politicians.

Which other neighbour of Thailand recently moved capitals? Myanmar ? Bet Prayut won't go down the route of changing the country's name just to keep up with the neighbours.

The elite are tired of have having to be soiled by being in the presence of so many common every day men.....They want their own ultra exclusive spread free of the riff raff....

Next, they will be changing the name back to Siam.
