snoop1130
EU still awaits 'legal and operational' Brexit ideas from UK: Barnier By Jorrit Donner-Wittkopf FILE PHOTO: European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier leaves the European Commission headquarters to attend a meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk in Brussels, Belgium, August 22, 2019. REUTERS/Francois Lenoir - RC1DAA01FD40/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Britain has yet to provide “legal and operational” proposals that could break the impasse over its departure from the European Union, the EU’s Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Thursday. “We are still ready to work on any new legal and operational proposal from the EU,” Barnier told reporters on arriving for talks with European lawmakers on the latest developments on Brexit. Barnier declined to comment on the political crisis in Britain, where parliament resumed on Wednesday after the Supreme Court ruled Prime Minister Boris Johnson unlawfully suspended it. Johnson insists he will take Britain out of the EU on Oct.31 with or without a deal to manage the fallout. Britain submitted its fourth technical paper to the EU this week to detail its proposals on customs arrangements after Brexit, diplomatic sources told Reuters, as London seeks to replace the contentious Irish border backstop in the stalled divorce treaty. But the EU says London’s ideas so far - on food and animal checks, customs and regulatory controls, checks on manufactured goods and market surveillance, among others - fall short and are not acceptable as alternatives. The backstop is anathema for many in Britain as it could tie the country to the EU’s trading rules for years to maintain an open Irish border and at the same time ensure the necessary controls between the bloc and Britain after they split. Philippe Lamberts, a liberal EU lawmaker from Belgium, spared Johnson no criticism as he arrived for the closed-door meeting with Barnier. “He’s not seeking a solution because a solution would mean first finding a compromise with the European Union, then building compromise in (the UK parliament) Westminster to pass an agreement,” Lamberts told reporters. “So if you really want to achieve that maybe you do not start by confronting people the way he does,” he said after Johnson goaded his rivals on Wednesday to either bring down the government or get out of the way to allow him to deliver Brexit. “So maybe his strategy is another one and I believe it has been all along...to provoke a no-deal Brexit but in a way that would allow him to blame others - either Brussels or Westminster.” -- © Copyright Reuters 2019-09-26 Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking Thailand news and visa info 1

This is not a matter of anyone letting the UK go. This is a matter of the UK coming up with a plan that incorporates its non-EU treaty commitments (for instance, the so-called Good Friday Agreement, which is an international treaty) and various practical measures into a withdrawal agreement. The reason for the so-called "backstop" device is a matter of historical fact, that it arose through discussions to provide a way for the UK to have an agreement that incorporates its non-EU treaty. So the UK cannot blame the EU for this as the EU had absolutely nothing to do with this treaty. But in the same way that the British media has turned the UK population against the EU by telling lies (one of the greatest purveyor of lies about the EU was the current PM who was Brussels correspondent for a long time - this is according to his boss!), the backstop has been reinterpreted as something that the EU imposed on the UK rather than something that the UK negotiators wanted. Whether you are pro or anti Brexit or whatever your view is on the EU, I think that most rational folks would agree that countries can enter into trade agreements and have a right to protect those trade agreements. If you do, you have to agree that the members of the EU have the right to protect the single market and all aspects involved. Since it is the UK that is leaving, why should the EU remove protection of the Single Market on one of its borders (that between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland)? The UK would never agree to making one of its ports into a free entry point with free movement of persons, capital and goods without even observation. So why does it want to force the EU to do so? 4

Popular Post sawadee1947
It is tiring and disgusting to see how this maniac PM on his ego-trip in a kind of neo - dictatorship is destroying peace, unity and freedom in Europe. The only highlight in Britain is the High Court and the parliament trying to prevent BJ further misuse of power as a non -elected PM (by people) being the most famous laughing stock (beside Prayut) in the world spilling UK's reputation. ???????????? 2

I think it was two Tory PM's who acted unlawfully. Wanted prevented from doing so by the Supreme Court, the other's actions reversed.

Always pros and cons. Dutch people are respectful and tolerant and people's views are respected and people mind their business. I was happy working there (near Roermond) so was my wife. The actions seen recently in parliament are so untypically British. Never seen such behavior which probably reflects the decline in British culture, behave and manners over the last several decades. Presided over and encouraged by the 2 main political parties. And therein lies the root. 2 parties who've both steadily moved away from the center. A considerable number of British people are fed up with the imposed multicultural politically correct culture constantly being rammed down their throats as utopia. But as things were coming to the boil they're being persuaded it's all the fault of the EU and not the British politicians who are really to blame! Just hope the people see the reality. 1

Time you learn how the EU functions, after being member since 1973. NEVER one member state can dominate. Only in case a veto of only one member state can stop, like.. giving AGAIN a postponement of leaving (UK) / entering ( Turkey) the EU. Therefore the Dominic Cummings story: Turkish people will massively migrate to the UK is total nonsense.. unless... with agreement of the UK prime minister in the EU council and after ratification in the UK Parliament. How come, so many British believed this nonsense ? No brains to verify ?
