I have quite a few different friends who come over to visit

To visit for a holiday is very different than living somewhere permanently.

It probably depends on personal circumstances. How much difficulties do you have with your visa?  How is your income affected by exchange rates?  How is your health? How is your healthcare insurance compared with what you can maybe get for free in your home country?

I forget sometimes who the players are here...

People who speak English?

To be enfranchised with regard to a country means to be given the rights of a citizen, in particular the right to vote, which doesn't apply to the farang you're talking about, so they can't be disenfranchised.

you probably meant disenchanted or alienated. Learning how to use the thesaurus you got for your birthday must be proving difficult for you.

en·fran·chise·ment
/inˈfranˌCHīzmənt,enˈfranˌCHīzmənt/

  1. 1.
the giving of a right or privilege, especially the right to vote.
"the World War hastened the enfranchisement of women"

    liberation from imprisonment or slavery.

    3.

It all depends how deep you get engaged while living in Thailand.

i.e. if you just live here simply as a single, it's much different to other people who try to raise children and have to face

the facts, school system etc. and see what's going on.

There are people who can just say, oh, wonderland Thailand, only Thai culture, and move on.

Others are more critical and point out what's not really correct ... and discuss it. Or try to discuss it.

Then other Farangs come on top and argue against each other, all the time ????

It's a forum, people come here to vent or discuss and share their experiences, which are not always good.

Doesn't mean they don't still enjoy life here.

One thing, over the years, which became very apparent to me is that you 'think' you can talk to like minded people with similar western background/education, to find some common sense.

But that's not the case, in every thread, they are arguing over the silliest and most apparent things against each other ????

Actually not only on a forum, I've seen Farang neighbors doing the same against each other off-line.

When you decide to live in Thailand, there is not only the Thai side of it which you have to learn and get into.

There is also the Farang abroad in Thailand, which is also completely different to the Farangs you engaged before you moved here.

It's quite an experience all of that, to say the least ???? But all good for me as of yet, not too bad.

I used to live in Pattaya up to 18 months ago, I returned to the UK for health reasons and the fact I was mis-diagnosed and ripped off by hospitals in Thailand (another matter sorry!)

First of all, I think Thailand is great, but problems like mine can arise as you get older.

As to the UK, well you need enough income etc to own or rent a property, a car is useful etc.

Provided you own a home, then my monthly outgoings for everything except food and bars etc is about £450.

Life is good, lots of supermarkets at a third of cost in Thailand, Chang etc can be as low as 70 pence a bottle in supermarkets, Beer etc can be as low as £2 a pint or more in pubs etc depending where you drink.

Of course I am not saying its perfect here, it rains...it can be cold, it can also be great, not many ladies etc, but that's what holidays are for!!

(No Thai immigration or Thai cops with hands out though!)

Even in the UK there are moaners just like in Thailand....its in the mindset!

So enjoy yourself in Thailand, just remember you might need or want to leave one day!!

Some people like Marmite, some dont .

Not sure what marmite is or why anyone would want to eat it [relative of termite?]

But the question is merely chocolate or vanilla...

My dad liked vanilla and couldn't understand how anyone might prefer chocolate - they were stupid.
Or just didn't know the truth...

There are some guys who fall in love with a dream of fluffy bunny rabbits at the drop of a hat then they find out the real world isn't like that, if someone has a bad experience rather than blame the immediate problem they blame the whole picture, for instance someone gets a 'wrong doing' by someone on a motorbike then they hate all motorbikes sadly this is a rather large percentage of our population.

If you feel happy and can afford to live a comfortable life in Thailand then why would you want to come back to England, don't get me wrong I like my country but we all have gripes, ie cost of living, damp dull horrible weather etc so if you're happy there stay and come back during the summer if you must for a visit because its obviously a little less damp and dull here. If you lived in paradise (wherever that may be) people would always find things to gripe about nowhere is perfect so decide on what your criteria is, you have already said you feel more motivated to get up and do something in Thailand so I think you have more or less answered your own question...

Agree! Seasons in UK make life more interesting, Spring especially. You do need heating and hot water but avoid 24/7 ants and mosquitoes. Irish Sea and North Sea coastlines are never far away.

Thailand indeed has its problems but why on earth anyone would want to return to the current mayhem in the UK, which is likely to be around for some considerable time, I wouldn't have a clue.

There is no"mayhem" in the UK though .

I am in a similar situation, though I wouldn't ever consider returning to the UK. Most people return because of either serious health issues, or they rely on limited income. I am lucky that I have a private pension on top of the government one, as well as savings and a small portfolio. I don't believe that people return because of TM30 chaos or other bureaucratic issues.

We have some seasons here in Thailand in the North.  The cool season is heaven, the rainy season is all lush and green and clean air, and the hot season is pollution and extreme temperatures.  That is just as interesting as the seasons back in the UK for me... I could do without the hot dry season here, and also do without the UK winter (which seems to be more than half the year these days).

I have less problems with ants here than back in the UK... and there were always wasps, midges and gnats about in the countryside (apart from winter time).

Coastlines are easy to get to from CM.. just go to the airport and hop on a plane.  Phuket has much nicer beaches then most of the UK ones.

What I miss about the UK is the countryside, wildlife, cleanliness and lack of pollution, as well as being able to easily communicate and understand each other and think / reason in a similar way.  I don't miss the yobs, crime, weather, taxes and utility bills, food, and a lot of miserable moaning people who are rather unsocial and not friendly as easily as Thai people.  Also I love how here we can live most of our lives outside (in the UK is was often too cold, raining and windy, to socialise outside or sit about outdoor restaurants and bars.

You need to realise that the ones who left Thailand, yet for some reason still need to make negative posts on a Thai forum, are not trying to convince anyone else that whatever country they went to - whether it be to return to their own, or some other, is better than here.  They are trying to convince themselves that they have finally made the right choice in their lives.  Anyone who truly became happy after moving elsewhere would get on with their lives without all the wading in self pity and loathing that we regularly see here from those who claim to have moved.

Most of us should see positive sides in any country and location.

There is no such place where everything is perfect and there is no such place where everything is only bad.

But when we move from place A to B and when we have to stay in B then it makes a lot of sense that we should think about all the good reasons to be in B and not A.

Because if we would dream all the time how wonderful A was but we must live in B that is not much fun.

So even if A was a lot better sometimes it makes sense to forget the good parts to enjoy B a little more.

But yeah, the UK might be a great place if you have parents or siblings to bludge a place to live off.

It would make it difficult moving back to the UK, if you had no friends there and you didnt like any of your family and your family didnt like you and if you also needed to have a female sleeping in your bed everynight and no female in the UK would be willing to do that  , it wouldnt be such an enjoyable place to go and visit

Yeah dudes, half the year in the USA, half in Thailand. What a great thing! Works for me. When Unigod was passing out the souls, the incipient particles near me got hit with s**hole places like Tau Faecundus IX (you know, that place where the Giant Wasps look to inject you with hungry larvae all the time, so you have to carry a stick to fight them off), the Sudan and France. I got the USA! And now I get Thailand too? Thanks, Unigod.

It's quite sad to hear from people that their home country, the U.K. Is a <deleted>hole. So many refer to it this way. I'm glad I come from a different country, I have no reason to escape, perhaps for the winters, but that's all. And happy to return to a great place to live.

so sad to hear the negativity about the UK all the time.

It all depends where in the UK you live, same for Thailand I am quite happy here been so for the last 15 years but I am surrounded by fields not cars, UK was the same fields not traffic.

Believe your friends--and yourself. You have to remember that posters on Thai Visa represent just a fraction of expats living in Thailand.  And, sometimes those that post have specific topics that they get some sort of pleasure commenting negatively on.

Just yesterday someone posted about a slow train ride he took from Pattaya to Bangkok and, low and behold, didn't someone just absolutely have to dash off a nasty comment about what he thinks of Pattaya--not even remotely the subject of the post and likely a place he doesn't live in or visit--since in his eyes it's a 'cesspool'.   I live year-round in Pattaya and believe my experience and not some absent poster.

Thailand has changed for the worse. I think this is an absolute, indisputable fact. Whether some frogs still like it in the kettle is another story. Or, some noobs find all more companionship here in a week than they've had in a lifetime, those are other stories.

But my life has changed. I'm 15-20 years older than that bar hopping handsum man of long ago. When I first semi settled in early retirement. And I'll tell you...being early 40s, reasonably good looking, money, 36-38thb USD. Life was good in Pattaya in early 00s

But I digress...

A. Can't own land.

A1. Condo prices an absolute laff. Management, maintenance, nothing near the ocean.

A2. I see what 8 million buys in Florida and that's pre recession.

B. Medicare at 65 is good value. Here medicine is practically mafia.

C. I'm worn out on coups and poor governance. I've been thru four almost.

D. I'm married. I never, ever thought I would get married but I met a gem of a woman.

E. Immigration both coming and going is tedious as is reporting.

E1. TM30. I'm ok with annual extension and 90 day online but TM30. I lost all respect. It's so stupid and redundant.

F. The air is sh1+ and will never get better. Bangkok streets smell of fetid garbage.

G. Getting old, dodging killer Moto taxis not a fave hobby

H. The coral is 90% DEAD as is the marine life

I. I have a good job but in a few years I'll be bringing in money. The exchange rate is just ridiculous.

J. I love the heat but it's just too damn hot all the time.

K. Idiots in transit on their phones are doing my head in. So is the way Thai shuffle about often staring at their phones like zombies. Other times just wandering aimlessly it appears.

L. It takes hours to get across Bangkok by taxi. Hours.

M. Prices are really climbing and seems like portions shrinking just like in US.

M. No rule of law. I mentioned poor governance but this is petty, venal corruption and sadness. Tired of Lulabelle stories. Koh Samui, etc.

N. I've seen everything I want to see here and in the region. My first trip was 1992.

I'm not bringing in money now and have lots of thb stashed away but I think I'll sour even more when I need to bring in monthly USD. That's when it will really hit home.

Upside is I have a great wife, good job and bank an easy 40k after expenses. I bet the wife banks 10k. Live in central Bangkok, teach at a great school which is only 40min commute door to door.

But it's wearing. Things are definitely getting worse here. I think it will greatly help in 4 years we get out and go down south to the ocean. But my wife has a decent job..

Another thing will work is us moving out to the gulf islands in season for 5-6 months. But that's my problem not the OP.

Of course you're friends stuck in cold, dreary UK think you're in paradise.

I feel like Jules.

But I'm trying real hard Ringo...
