In fact there would have to be as many flights again to take 'em home again.
Moo 2
40 million "for sure" and free visa, if that's not enough we'll give every Chinese pocket money to order Tom Yum Goon dish at the restaurants. So quite a bit of their spending is missing in the statistic.
MRToMRT
Theres a lot of anti Chinese tourist rhetoric going off in this thread. But I suppose they have their own forums which generalize about all westerners in Thailand being aging sex tourists, pedos, crims and the like. The past is the past guys/gals, its gone and the new future for Thailand is asian centric tourism. Accept that Thailand is Thailand run by Thais, as it should be, not some outpost of a European colonial mentality and old men looking for financially unfortunate girls. Where does TAT get the expenditure from is an unanswered question and I think my earlier guess of them taking tax-free shopping, i.e. King Power, for their expenditure data might be closer than I thought. No sane western tourist buys anything from them. The creator of that webpage also acknowledges they got no clue where the original data comes from: Quote How are these data gathered? We honestly do not know, but they have been reported for many years. We assume, this is one of the reasons, that when changing money etc. one is obliged to show identification. We can only assume that as good as feasible, all these data are tabulated somewhere, and the expenditure per tourist and per country of origin, registered. Hotels can also gather revenue data and report them (?). Nevertheless, it would be wise to consider the data gathered as an approximation. The number of tourists is immigration entries in certain visa classes/exemptions/voa. It does not take into account any transit traffic that goes f.ex. from swampy to DMK, nor exclude those that stay overnight to catch a connecting flight. They could do it, but the figures wouldn't be as sexy. In other words, the data either doesn't exist, or they used "creative" methods to filter it. Airbagwill
Do I detect an undertone of "hard cheese"? For decades Westerners have seen themselves as dominating tourism in Thailand (not wholly true, though) and now there seems a lot of resentment at being usurped by Asia. I think they should wake up and smell the coffee.

geoffrobbo
Obviously statistics published by the government don't lie and are 100% truthful. It just seems odd that, for example, businesses in Pattaya that depend on tourist numbers and tourist spend have struggled or closed down in the last 3 years yet with much lower numbers in 2003 to 2012 were doing ok. Very strange.

Very strange. For Pattaya this is not strange. Firstly the nature of the market in Pattaya has seen a rapid turnover in businesses for decades. Secondly many of the businesses closing are those catering primarily for Westen customers. If they fail to change with the demographics they are more likely to fail. WeekendRaider
why not? 6,400 million of us have never traveled very far, or even been inside an airplane even once in their life... yet. so 40 out of 6,400 is not a big deal. and many people, especially retired folks who are the biggest growing cohort in the world today, often travel more than once a year. so then it is 40 out of 12,800 or 40 out of..... whatever. tourism is why we no longer need to endure more Charles Bronson movies about New York City. tourism, and deregulated air travel are what has made New York so better off than in the early 1970's. anyone who owns a casino, or a expensive golf resort or 5 star hotel knows this for sure. wink wink. Trump. our only realistic president on Climate Change.... which has tourism and air travel written all over it as a political agenda. now you understand why we went along with having Trump nominated and elected. and that 40 million tourists, especially so close to China, should be a easy target. tourism and air travel are essential now. yet it only has begun. very real, 6,400 million prospective new tourists.... as soon as someone crosses about $US 5,000 in annual income, which is happening everywhere now.
