Drivers of polluting vehicles will be arrested, warns Prayut

At a ceremony held to present government policy to the National Farmers Council on Thursday (October 3), Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said drivers of vehicles emitting pollution will be arrested, adding that transport business owners have to be held responsible for emissions caused by old auto parts.

 

He also added that Thai farmers can help the government reduce the particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometres, or PM2.5, by reducing their outdoor burning which causes the unhealthy pollution.

 

Meanwhile, the Department of Industrial Works said it is ready to cooperate with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) to tackle the pollution problem by installing PM2.5 detectors in areas that have many factories and sending an inspection team to address the problem.

 

Prakob Vivitjinda, the department’s director-general, said his agency will install PM2.5 detectors on RTAF drones to examine unhealthy levels of dust in the air, especially in industrial areas, before sending a team to inspect factories.

 

“The department also plans to install more real-time sewage detectors that will send information round the clock. These detectors have already been installed in factories that discharge more than 500 cubic metres of water daily, and this has already proved to be successful.”

That doesn't bode well for tens of thousands of bus, taxi and songthaew drivers around the country, or is it more hot air coming from his mouth ?

Who says this government lacks creativity? This latest brown envelope team is pure genius.

What a ridiculous thing to say, even by his standards.

So are they going to start with those people driving those clapped out old buses from the 80's (or earlier), or stop his deputy taking the RTP plane for short journeys? And are those new Tanks they bought gonna run on fresh air or what?

 

Or how about make his motorcades shorter by 5 cars or so. They are super excessive over here.

The same as they arrest drivers of speeding buses and passenger vans, overloaded and poorly maintained trucks, pickups with dozens in the tray, etc. etc. I am sure this time the PM's instructions will be followed (NOT). 

Great idea. Take polluting vehicles off the road and Bangkoks traffic problem is solved overnight.

If that ever happens it would solve the congestion problems in Bangkok, as there would be very few buses and trucks left on the roads.

Correct, it's the owners of the offending vehicles that need prosecuting as many drivers are just trying to make a living by driving.

All vehicles except electric emit pollution. Maybe something is lost in the translation and they mean vehicles that doesn't conform to unenforced environmental regulation will be stoped. I highly doubt it but I support the great leader in this endeavours.

If they crush the vehicule then the problem is fixed. It's more humane than crushing the drivers. 

As all vehicles pollute, are we back to horse and carts?

Is the Government offering rewards? My dash cam records hundreds of smoke belching trucks and buses everyday. I could become rich hehehehe

If he stopped talking, it may actually solve the PM 2.5 problem. Plus, the air will be much cooler too.

Have not seen any red trucks in Chiang Mai today. They must have all heard the news and are busy upgrading their vehicles. They are so scared to be arrested ????

Dear PM Gen. Prayut, it could be a good start if it were not on the wrong side, the biggest environmental criminals are factories and farmers.
It is easy to arrest the little ones and let the rich go, a warning is not enough in the direction of the big ones, there are laws and you must make them respected!
I see the sugar factory in our village every day that drains dirty water into the river and the chimney that expels a thick and stinking smoke!
You are a person who cares about the health of your people (at least it seems) you would like to prohibit smoking and even the consumption of alcoholic beverages, but you really don't do anything to reduce the destruction of the environment which in the end is also our destruction!

More mass transit in the form of trains, vehicles converted to LP, and impound and destroy vehicles that do not conform to standards after a reasonable length of time to correct the problems, would be some of the ways to achieve cleaner air.  However, the reality is....nothing of a lasting nature will happen until enough people demand and cause it to happen.

An easy way to make a huge improvement for this would be new buses in Bangkok, electric if possible. It's funny seeing pictures from the 80's and it's the same buses as now. Those things belch out clouds of black smoke every time they pull away and there are hundreds of them running 24 hours a day.

 

Of course, tanks and helicopters are more important, in which case just shut up about it.
