NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States has kept its World Health Organization designation as a country that has eliminated measles even though it had 1,249 reported cases this year in the worst outbreak since 1992, federal health officials said on Friday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said in a report on Friday that 75% of cases of the highly contagious and sometimes deadly disease this year were associated with outbreaks in New York City and New York State. Officials have blamed the spread on parents who decided against vaccinating their children.

"Both jurisdictions have since passed two incubation periods for measles with no additional reported cases associated with these outbreaks as of Oct. 1, 2019," the report said. "However, continued vigilance is important to ensure that elimination is sustained."

An outbreak is typically considered over when no new measles cases are reported for 42 days, which is double the incubation time for the disease.

The disease was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, meaning there was no continuous transmission for a year. The outbreak in New York this year narrowly avoided meeting that threshold.

The last rash onset associated with a measles case in New York, where the outbreak initially centered on Orthodox Jewish communities, was recorded on Aug. 19.

"Our nation's successful public health response to this recent measles outbreak is a testament to the commitment and effectiveness of state and local health departments, and engaged communities across the country," CDC Director Robert Redfield said in a statement on Friday.

Health officials have attributed the outbreak, which affected 31 states this year, to a vocal fringe of U.S. parents who refuse to vaccinate their children because they believe, contrary to scientific evidence, that ingredients in vaccines can cause autism.

The New York State Department of Health said on Thursday it had administered nearly 85,000 measles-mumps-rubella vaccinations since October 2018 in the three counties where the outbreak occurred, up 75% from the previous year.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar in April said the outbreak was "completely avoidable" and that it was the unfortunate result of some people's choice to deny the proven safety of vaccines.

Parents should have to provide proof of vaccination to schools before they can attend so as to eliminate outbreaks and infection or possibly cause the death of another child .

vaccine makers cannot be sued anymore since 1986 when ronald reagan decided to protect the manufacturers as they were too many lawsuits against them from damages caused by vaccines

they then threatened to not make any medication anymore leaving a gap in the demand/supply chain

human health services were ordered to check for safety of vaccines or make them more safe

they never did in 30 years

we got from 10 vaccines to 72, profits anyone ?

and they are the only product forced upon the people (nazi germany style) without being able to sue them if you are your child die or are disabled for life by them

so all the "they are safe" people out there... I am not against vaccines, but they never proved they were safe by clinical trials and you, unless you are blind, must see more people injured , chronically sick and children now are predicted to live less longer than their parents

there was one study done, once, and the result was they could not prove if vaccines were helpful , useless or harmful.

based on that one study, all vaccines, existing and new, were suddenly grandfathered as being "safe"

does not make any sense

but you have people who blindly believe government, science that has been corrupted by big companies paying scientists to give them the results they paid for (or those would never work for the industry again) and sheeple

did you forget the vioxx scam and many other "medicines" that caused tens of thousands of deaths ?

every single pharmaceutical company has been caught with fraude, fake advertisement, fake science and made to pay millions, but what is 100 million when you make 3 billion per year ?  the cost of doing business

Millions used to die every year before vaccinations. Also, it is not just death. Some measles victims suffer permanent physical damage (brain, sight, hearing).

In 1980, 2.6 million people died of it, and in 1990, 545,000 died; by 2014, global vaccination programs had reduced the number of deaths from measles to 73,000. Despite these trends, rates of disease and deaths increased from 2017 to 2019 due to a decrease in immunization. The risk of death among those infected is about 0.2%, but may be up to 10% in people with malnutrition.

In the last 5 years, the number of measles cases have increased 9 fold in Europe, and 72 died in 2018. Anti-vaxers are killing people with their propaganda.

Every country what doesn't use vacinations what are available for any child disease is lead by idiots.

Even those morrons what have all kind of excuses for not want any vacinations.

When not sure the kids had those shots just give them in school.

A while ago i read in Holland they not start vacinate again for measles because not enough peoples are infected (and died?) again every year. In Belgium they also doubthing now to do that.

So i guess they have a chart for peoples to die before they will start again.
