If I book a flight to Thailand with a return flight three months later, can i enter thailand on a 1 month visa and go to Jomtien immigration for the extra 2 months or do i have to get the extension before i leave the UK ?. Will the airport stop me travelling if I only have the entry 1 month customary visa on arrival?.

No 1 month visa I am aware of? You mean 30 days on visa exempt?

What extra 2 months? (do you have Thai wife/children? 60 days)

Proper solution as a tourist: get a tourist visa in the UK.

Gives you 60 days on entry, can be extended once for 30 days at Thai immigration office.

If i get 60 day visa i will still need an extra 30 days so will the airport allow me to fly with a 60 day visa if my flight return date is 90 days, this seems no different to the 30 day (1 month visa). I come with my English wife we are both 50+

i've done this in the past and never had any issues (come in with 60-day visa when return flight is in 90-days)

if they ask you just say you're visiting Vietnam/Cambodia etc. in between

A one month visa exempt will only entitle you to extend for a maximum of 30 days and not 60 days. You have to leave Thailand after two months.

For a tourist visa of 2 months, you can also extend for one month so that's a total of 3 months.

Therefore, it's better to get a tourist visa of two months first.

Unfortunately you are at the mercy of the airline.

Some will make trouble, refuse boarding or at best have you sign a letter stating your responsibility for any extra cost. Others don't care.

Thai immigration is very unlikely to make any problem.

One solution would be cheap one-way bookings out of Thailand (to Malaysia e.g.) within the 60 days and later just skip them.

This would be proof of onward travel and satisfy the airline.

Both over 50 would open the possibility to apply for Non-O visa which allow 90 day stay.

I don't know how much effort that is in the UK, so let others comment.

Thanks every one for your help, it seem there is not a clear distinction on this, as one said, "you are at the mercy of the airline". I will certainly get the 60 day visa in UK and will also contact Emirates for their policy,  happy day's

There is a clear distinction.

If you arrive on visa exempt (30 days permission to stay), you are required to have a flight out of Thailand within those 30 days. This may not always be enforced, but it is a requirement. A 30 day visa exempt entry can be extended for 30 days.

If you arrive with a tourist visa (60 day permission to stay), you are not required to have any ticket out of Thailand. You can arrive on a one way ticket if you so wish. The 60 days you get with a tourist visa can also be extended for 30 days.

Extensions are only given at an immigration office, which are only in Thailand, not at embassies or consulates.

For tourist visa entries or visa exempt entries the usual extension of stay is only 30 days ... The exception  being if you want to visit your Thai wife or child.

I'm not quite up on the latest visas available but back in 1983 I got a non-immigrant 90 day visa from either a Thai consulate or embassy (I forgot which) while in the USA.  I did this by mail as I didn't live near either type of Thai office.  I was also much younger younger than 50 back then!
