Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today (Wednesday) called on the National Hazardous Substances Committee to vote openly over the ban or restriction on the use of paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos at its forthcoming meeting.

Mr. Anutin today held a video conference with the directors of all provincial hospitals, department heads and senior health officials who have all taken a common stand to demand the complete ban of the three toxic farm chemicals as of December 1st this year.

Professor Dr. Thirawat Hemachutha, head of the Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, said he hopes the NHSC will have regard for the safety of 66 million Thais and will ban the controversial herbicides.

There's a fair bit of pressure on the NHSC members....do they have to pay back any possible gifting if the vote goes for a ban?

Twitching sphincters for the next few weeks:))

There are circa 30+ members with only 50% required for a quorum to hold a meeting. So half could escape involvement by "excused" absence.

A majority of votes is required for action so a vote of 51% of the 50% of membership is needed.

See Chapter 1, Sections 6-12 of the Hazardous Substance Act.

So it could come down to about 7 or 8 people needed for the ban.
