American Electronics that will work in Thailand

Featured Replies

I know the difference between American 120V 60Khz electricity and Thai 220V 50Khz electricity. So, are there any categories of electronics will safely run in Thailand using a converter plug? (Obviously, buying everything new in Thailand is the recommended route, but is there anything I can use until old things die?)

1. Lights/lamps (with Thai-purchased bulbs, if course)?

2. Electric fans?

3. Small kitchen appliances (blender, mixer, knife sharpener, coffee maker, electric kettle, rice cooker)?

4. Charger for my electric drill and circular saw?

5. Charger for my music boombox?

I have heard that in general, anything that has a power supply converter won't work. Understood.

I have never needed an adapter to convert a 2 prong flat blade plug. Most receptacles I have seen in Thailand are universal plug compatible.

Any electronic consumer product designed only for the US market only will not work in countries such as Thailand without some type of voltage step-down converter. Most small kitchen appliances, hair dryers, fans, etc fall into this category.

Any electrical product that has an inline or builtin universal voltage adapter should  work, TV's, computer, etc.

Some rechargeable products such as shavers, cordless power tools, etc will work as long as the charger has a universal voltage rating. Be aware there are airline regulations on lithium batteries.

Most consumer electrical products have their voltage limitations listed on the product or packaging. If it doesn't include 240 volt, it won't work without a converter.

The only compatible electrical items I brought or needed from the US were my laptop, cellphone and shaver.
