Seems you got that one wrong also.

I think that you are the one who is wrong.

No, not me, I know I'm not wrong but, if it makes you happy, you can think that.

All the major Telcos in Thailand are already doing this - and every time you update your app they learn more -- this is not a conspiracy theory as I worked with this biggest Telco and saw what they are doing through there software development life cycles for the government agencies - remove all Telco software ASAP like what TRUE, AIS - DTAC do - they know what your doing and they know when you do it and when.... 24/7/365

Didn't we just joke earlier today about the biometric news being all for justifying further moves and actions? So this article shows the first one.
Guess they are not making a big joke here. Seems we are lucky they are so slow in and incompetent, might take another decade, but then the fun is really over.

Guess I really have to be on my VyprVPN with Chameleon all the time and soon use a GPS jammer on my bike, for the sake of basic privacy.

P.S. In Laos there is also some heavy developments towards advanced China like systems,
the ones on the road between Nongkhai and Vientiane are almost done. Could go much faster than we think if Thailand gets them to help.

I anticipate the proposal will be amended so only foreigners will be required to have GPS on their vehicle because they are the source of most criminal activity in Thailand and can best afford the cost of the units.

I disagree, we can be more efficient and propose a bracelet GPS for any alien in the country.

I am ready and willing to have a GPS chip implanted under my skin if it reliefs us from the punishment of TM30

He has said that the plan would lessen road accidents and crime.

For crimes, it will do none of that.  It could, but it won't.  In many countries, people are deterred from crime due to being aware they are being monitored, may be caught, may be punished, etc.  In Thailand there is little mentality along those lines in regards to doing criminal things.  As far as lessoning road accidents?  Foolish to believe that.  Photographing an accident or recording GPS coordinates and speed of vehicles does not lessen accidents!  Makes for good and interesting documentation, but does not lessen anything.

Teach them to drive! That would be a good place to start. My GF already had her license but didn't know how to drive. No clue, could not even make a turn without hitting something. However, she passed her driving test with flying colors. ????

Someone just invested in a GPS device company.

The logic is flawed. Criminals won't install a GPS, just as criminals wont do TM30, so it will not affect crime.

These idiots can't get 50% of people to wear helmets or fix brake lights...how they going to enforce a 3,000 baht GPS system.

Fail.

This chidchop fellow ought to hang a GPS on his <deleted>. Stupid fellow!

Personally I am all for it and hope all travel is available on line, for everyone...Me...Home - Tesco...Home - Global...Home - local Bar.  What I really want to see is Cane Toad's (Prawit) travel details or to see the movement of our latest PhD government official...and for a laugh out local constabulary. Bet it would make better reading than mine

You'll need to chip helicopters, planes, tanks, subs, etc. Now your going to far.

Great idea. Chip the subs so that when they "dive, dive, dive" to deep, those in the barracks can find them and send down a "cave-like" crew to rescue the sailors.

Gps location is acquired by a tracker, receiving signals from an array of satellites (minimum of 4-6 is required at each moment i think, for a precise location and speed)

But sending GPS location to police HQ requires mobile internet - provided by a separate module with a sim card pre-installed,

because to send signal to an orbiting satellite directly is very complicated.

Sat-phone is very expensive.

Probably they want to improve 3g/4g/5g networks?

Some lobbying by network companies perhaps?

So don't worry about jamming gps signal - there is none. just turn off data connection.

In Russia all public transport has gps and a device for uploading it's location.

For users it provides a benefit of seeing the location of each bus online on the map, very cool, along with ETA.

For transport companies - reduces fuel consumption and promotes stricter following to the route - your boss sees your every move, no slack here.

So for public transport it will be a wonderful idea, along with trains, ER vehicles, fire dpt, PEA maintenance trucks, lazada etc.

first of all how can they possibly monitor hundreds of thousands of vehicles. 2nd sounds were heading to North Korea. Only in Thailand canthey come with these ideas. Agree with the op's give everyone a chip.

He said that if all vehicles had the technology then the DLT would be able to monitor speeds.

And the added benefit would be that the location of the driver would be known at all times meaning that crime could be lessened too.

GPS only gathers data which can be used after an accident or crime... it does nothing to prevent either !

As proved by installing them in mini-vans... case closed !

I think one draws a bath?

Draw a bath is from the days when water was drawn in the sense that it was pumped or supplied in some way that didn't rely simply on water pressure. Neither it, nor prepare a bath is normally used now. We speak instead of running a bath if we have to

As in the case of the elderly Red Indian who had his name changed to Running Water.

Seems that they can run a country, though.

You've nailed it JW, their state owned national airline is a prime example!

I'm guessing someone's brother, or maid, owns a GPS manufacturing plant.

Haha. Yes - similar to my own thoughts. All GPS installations to be purchased and fitted by Government accredited firm, "Saksayam Chidchob GPS Suppliers.Ltd"

All existing models are to be replaced because of sub-standard Chinese and other non-Thai manufacturers.

Great idea!

The reason people generally obey traffic laws in the West is because of the fear of prosecution

You're right, but having common sense would be better.

Transport minister Saksayam Chidchob has ordered the Department of Land Transport to investigate the possibility of requiring that all privately owned vehicles including motorcycles have GPS by law.

How in gods name do people like this attain a position of responsibility?

[rhetorical question]

Sponsored by your friendly neighbourhood GPS manufacturer via little brown envelopes!  Governments already interfere too much in our daily lives.

Enforcement, 24/7, of existing rules and regulations by the BIB would go a long way in reducing road deaths.

If you mean that Google knows where I am, that's fine, I authorized them. But authorizing the government to know where I am is a different matter.

Google reports to NSA....
