Medical tourism

I have just broken a filled tooth and checked the cost with a dentist. It appears that implants are about the same price here as they are in UK, 75000THB approx 2000GBP. Since modern medicinal procedures are global I wonder why we should expect them to be cheaper here in Thailand than in UK. What about other procedures? Is this a “How long is a piece of string question”?

I don’t think that there is enough tooth left for that, it has to be pulled.

Check out CAMBODIA.  Phnom Penn has some very good facilities at a fraction of the costs of THAILAND.

OP, there is a whole thread about prices for implants.

You compare sticky prices in a country where the exchange rate is very high at the moment with sticky prices in a country where the exchange rate is unusually low at the moment.

That is what I paid last time. I am learning a lot and learning to worry about infection and bones being rotted away so that there is nothing to screw into! I returned Two years ago to my dentist in the UK after a fourteen year break During which time the odd filling, bridge etc. was done in Bangkok at the Fundee clinic at half of today’s prices as uhuh observes.

Thank you for that. My post is about the exchange rate perhaps rendering Medical Tourism, at least for dentistry, pointless. 

Now I need to discuss with knowledgable people the pros and cons of where I have done whatever is required. 

 

To the forum: 

I had an appointment to see a dentist who doesn’t attend everyday at Fandee and who would pull the tooth for the specialist who would do the implant but he attends the clinic only once a month.   His advice was that since I was leaving for the UK in March I could attend the Bangkok hospital where a CT scan could be done, the tooth pulled and an implant done without delay, the figure he quoted was 75000THB. 

Bangkok hospital is not convenient and there are hospitals all over Bangkok so do all hospitals have the ability to do the job? 

There is no pain but I feel that if infected there may not be any symptom except perhaps halitosis. How important is haste in being treated? 

Is an implant necessary bearing in mind that people used to have teeth missing?  

What about pulling the tooth to ensure no further damage through infection then having the Implant done in UK by my regular dentist?

I wonder if The Agricultural University may teach dentistry because a clinic has opened in the grounds which may be ex students or faculty I may try there for advice. 

Any advice or comments on my situation would be appreciated.

Implants are about 50 k baht in BPH. The Balkans in Europe have a good reputation for cosmetic dentistry

Thanks for that, the topic title gives the wrong impression the only comparison I would make is between UK where I stay for the summer and Bangkok in the winter.  The advantage of Thai prices was incidental and since it no longer exists the time and place is a matter of necessity.

Have you any knowledge or ever had any dental work done in Cambodia? I think not obviously by your remarks, well I have!

 

I suggest you research before negatively commenting!

 

A great deal of the newer practices in Phnom Penn use dental surgeons trained and sometimes from South Korea. Their services, pricing and facilities are outstanding.

Room Chang hospital is one of these and a leading dental practice, and I have had dental work done there. I had porcelain veneers done a couple of years ago and I still have them and I was told by a UK dentist that they were of good quality.

 

There are also a number of good practices in Siem Reap operated by Russian dentists that do all kinds of bridgework, root canal, implants etc

Implants and crowns are comparatively expensive here because the prostheses ate imported. You save only on labor costs.

 

With the steep depreciation of the British pound coupled with strong baht,  many private medical  and dental  costs will be same or less than in private jospitsls in Thailand.

Differences in quality and in prices of implants are huge.  

The field is not regulated at all,  and there is a lot of money to be made.

So you may find implants that break after a year,  you may find prices like 200,000 or 300,000 baht, and you may find few dentists giving good advice on the question whether you need an implant at all. 

Try to find one you trust for further advice,  and don't rush it.

 

The best and most expensive in Thailand would be Dental Hospital,  Sukhumvit 77 (BTS onnut),  02-092 2000.

If you are in Pattaya, Bangkok Pattaya Hospital's dental department is very good and very expensive (most would say overpriced).

Get an opinion there, and you know the upper ceiling.  You can always trade down.

Thanks very much.  I never considered that there might be.a quality issue, I think that I will seek an opinion on whether it would be safe to wait until I retirn to UK.
