Much more. I could understand that Cambodia and Lao people want do it. Maybe some European over 65 years want to do it for fun.

But to other people from Europe and USA???

Have you been to Thailand? Lots of younger foreigners work here, operating real estate agencies, gyms, restaurants, not to mention all the digital nomads, the bar managers, etc.

So very clearly many people find it attractive to work in Thailand, and I wouldn’t be surprised that some of them do it without the proper visa and work permit, hence why immigration is justified in cracking down on “tourists” with back-to-back 30 day entry stamps.

Also your comparison with Europe forgets that it’s a region comprised of countries with different living standards. If you are uneducated in Portugal, you’ll probably struggle to find a job that pays the equivalent of 40,000 baht, which is way above the minimum wage there.

I was getting 140 pounds/day in 2009 working as a substitute high school teacher in the UK.

(7,000bht/day)

hat was about the least you could earn as a school-teacher.

Thats a hard job to do and no doubt you had to put up with a lot of <deleted> from the kids. I was in London at the time on 500 quid a day IT contract. Wish I was there now on that.

Have people from Europe work as 200.000 baht per months. They never gets problems with immigration because the company take care. It is not many but very few. The most Europeans gets problems in Thai costume because immigration thinks they work in Thailand . What people who have no big experiences can get in Thailand  200.000 baht per month.some can get  50.000 per months? Who want to work for it?'why stop the tourist of false accusations of working here?

48 hours per week. NoI vacation. No pension

Might not be many from Europe but there is plenty from other parts of the world.... not all work for pittance not work 48hours a week.

for instance my current workplace is 40hrs a week, same as my previous place and same as all of my expat friends that work here, we all get 20 days vacation leave, that Thai staff get 10.

Minimum wage here? I know many Thai people in issan province who works for 9.000 baht per months. I know young people who works for 7000 baht per month. Why? Because is not easy to find a job in north east now. If people do not have very good education. Sorry 50.000 per months not many people gets if they work in Scholl. Thai teacher in private simple Scholl makes 15.000 baht per months in north east. No pension. Foreign teacher from 20.000 baht to 35.000 bath.

That the reality. Of course if you work in stock market in Bangkok you make much more. But how many procent work their?

Look like people never go from bars. Only drink and complain and know nothing

Of course if people work in Bangkok they make more.

Bangkok

1. Pollution

2. Crowd with people

3. Traffic jams

4. Bad quality of apartments. Unless you pay 20.000-25.000 per months.

5. No nature. Must go out of Bangkok and stay in jams for many hours.

5. Bad air. Which course lung cancer.

6. Expensive to live in general.

Sure girlfriend from their bar. Very few families with high income and good position in Thai society would want their dother to meet a farang man . Maybe 20 year ago.

As I said come from Europen Getto family than can marry anyone. Sure better stay in Thailand than in Europe Getto.

Anyway when I was a small boy I got maybe 10.000 baht per months and was lucky and happy.

Now I work in Europe around 55 hours per week. Salary old exchange 5 years ago 500.000 . Now 350.000 because of thai baht. Of course per months. Vacation anytime I want. Pension +++.

I'd agree with you, but know many farmers who have trouble making 3,000bht/adult in a family.

80% of the Thai population are still rural farmers.

My niece (with a degree) only manages to earn 400bht/day (8,000bht/month).

Many moons ago I worked as a scuba dive master in Thailand, and made a solid 40k Baht/month or more, with housing included. At that point in my life it was a good value, even if it was 10-20% of what I made previously.  While I did save some money, it was mostly just a very early (and short-lived) retirement.

For many people, doing something where they get an extra US$500-1,000 per month to live on can make a big difference in lifestyle.

Based on the stories here though, most of the people are “living here, working there.”  That grey area is hard to really regulate. You can’t get a work permit, the work you do has nothing to do with Thailand, and there really isn’t a visa that fits unless you are married to a Thai or over 50.  Some people might cross the line as to “working here”, but I think it is not the majority.

Re-read my post. I said 40,000 baht was way above the minimum wage *there* (referring to Portugal). The minimum wage in Portugal is 700 EUR (and many are paid less) which is currently about 23,000 baht.

The original poster asked why would anyone go to Thailand when the salary is so low compared to their home country, which is why I pointed out that salary in Europe is not universally good.

I listed several occupations that foreigners fill, I fail to see the relevance of what your friends make in Isaan, because obviously the foreigners who come here do not apply for jobs as cleaners, security guards, unskilled construction workers, farmers in Isaan, etc.

They normally run their own business catering to other tourists, expats, foreign clients (online work), etc.

What a stupid remark. You misread my comment and then think everywhere in Thailand is like rural Isaan. I am in Chiang Mai, the educated Thais around me make significantly more than your friends in Isaan, so you need to get around more!
