Health minister says no further delay to Dec 1st ban on farm chemicals

 

 

Thailand’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reiterated today that there will be no delay to the enforcement of the ban on paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos, which will come into effect on December 1st.

 

Mr. Anutin, who is also deputy prime minister, reasserted the Public Health Ministry’s backing of the National Hazardous Substances Committee’s ban after the Department of Agriculture is reported to have proposed that the committee delay the it for six months, in order to give it more time to dispose of the 38,000 tonnes of remaining stocks of the chemicals.

 

The public health minister maintained that the main concern of his ministry is protecting people from the health threat posed by the three toxic substances, adding that the responsibility of finding appropriate alternatives rests with other agencies.

Wonder if this 'no delay' will be the same as riding in the back of pick-ups ?

The health minister says no further delay to dec 1st ban, only thing is he didnt say which december.

Just like Prayut kept saying, there will be an election this year, but it took 4 years to happen.

Health Minister imposes the ban and then passes the buck to someone else to find alternative solutions for the farmers. 

Typical Prayut government policy implementation. Announce the policy and let someone else worry about the consequences.

There seems to be a distinct lack of leadership in the coordination of these policy decisions. Media grandstanding seems to take priority over anything else.

If you don't ban the existing product no-one is forced to find an alternative.

The ban has been on the cards for some time and widely advertised.... only the lazy are refusing to find an alternative and cry about the ban coming too quickly!

As for the traders saying they have 38,000 tonnes in stock is testament to them not wishing to change their ways!

They'll probably load the 38,000 tonnes into the new subs and dump it deep sea.

Not quite sure what else they'll use the subs for.

Maybe an under water taxi service using the klongs to get around Bangkok to help alleviate traffic congestion.

I predict there will be plenty of chemicals for the farmers for years to come.....Smuggling chemicals will become a respected profession...The farmers will be fine....
