So, you are 45 yo, book a holiday in Thailand, have your round trip ticket, get you Visa on arrival.  How do you overstay?  Do airlines let you book a return ticket for longer that your Visa allows as a tourist?

actualy yes!! I fly in with China Southern...i stay 34 days....visa only is 30 days. Nobody told me i cant fly..paid the ticket..no problem.

So I need to go to immigration office and renew visa if i am a week of 3 there...yes?

Tourism will no longer be an attraction,  not western tourists anyway...the power elite does not like western influence.  Currently Bahrain and Dubai are freerer than Thailand. For anyone with money these are the places to go. They also have excellent night life and P4P scene with girls from all over the world. There are excellent restaurants and street food. The economy travellers who in two decades transformed Banglampoo and the KSR from a poor backwater to a booming wealthy area will stop coming here too. Younger people do not expect to threatened by police for minor drug issues nor do independent travellers expect to be bogged down by bureaucracy nor do they like the over regulation and standardisation of travel destinations. Pattaya ruined by the military,  Bangkok spoiled, the KSR wiped out, the islands terrorized by cops, army, and immigration police, the old mountain treks over regulated.....what's left? An expensive country, miles from nowhere with an over valued currency. With daily stories about the persecution of foreigners all over the internet its no wonder Pattaya and elsewhere are experiencing a downturn.  Very sad.

But this is what Thai government wants!!!!

Thailand for the Thais....well pretty soon they can have that,-)

Without knowing why he's on overstay it's impossible to judge, if they're gonna start arresting guys who missed their flight cos they drank too much, that'd be worrying. On the face of it, it does seem just the teeniest bit of an overreaction. Like Thailand needs this kind of publicity? Given the dearth of Western tourists.

Good post but who are the KSR and how have they been wiped out?

And what hotel in the entire world is going to scan a passport to see if they are on overstay?

Seriously?

Each time I have checked into hotels in Thailand and Malaysia they have turned to the visa page, also take a copy of that along with bio page, guess in Thailand for the hotel completing the TM30 reporting

You have read the situation well. To my surprise I found Vietnam very free and easy with drugs, not that I have any interest in drugs, nor is there the relentless shakedowns by traffic police that we see in Thailand. Vietnam seems the big picture, annual increase in tourists of 20%, this will not happen when you jail them when they arrive for liking the country too much.

They take my money THEN say no. Cheat me. Scam.

So I not go, I not spend my money in Australia.

i not hate Aussie. Only there embassy.

You applied for a visa and got refused.

Not getting your application fee back,

is hardly being cheated or scammed.

Throw the German in prison together with thai rapists, criminals and murderers and make a statement that this will happen to all foreigners who forget to renew expired visas.

@banderNaaa... he will be in a deportation cell. Not nice either but he won´t be with Thai rapists and criminals.

Hans,

@Hans007You know your Visa is good for 30 days only and you have a stamp in the passport telling you when to leave. Is so hard to understand? And yes: go to immigration anytime and get an extension.

Thai hotels NOW have an obligation to call Thai immigration to arrest you if on overstay. I know this for a fact from more than one year ago as I ask hotels about this. The ones that won't snitch on you refuse to check you in.

@Langkawee They have the obligation? Maybe but I would not think they check. My Thai friend works as a receptionist in a big hotel in BKK and neither she nor her colleagues have heard of this. Also, they do not check on the Visa page and keep copies of the information page only.

And what happens to the people who checked into a hotel while the visa was still valid and expired during their stay? Maybe they have extended it. Maybe they have flown out of the country and back in again without informing the hotel. Will the hotel have to check if the guest has renewed or extended his visa? NO.

Come on, the first thing they do is write down everything down from your passport and TM6 card, you need to try checking into a hotel and you'll know. I was on my 2nd to last day and the hotel told me the last day I could stay was tomorrow. Manager was kind, didn't want to snitch on me, however I was flying out the next day.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

You're putting the arrest of an over-stayer on the same level as the Nazi Party's persecution of its political opponents and the Jews? Wow.

Get this. You travel to a different country from your own. They tell you very clearly when you are supposed to leave by. Why am I supposed to feel any sympathy for someone who ignores this and stays past that date. They have broken a reasonable law that they are very well of … the date is in their passport.

I always suspect that many of the people on this site who defend overstayers are also the ones that rail against illegal immigrants in their home countries. I guess it depends who the illegals are, right?
