Hi Yinn,

I will answer like #1-2-3-4 as listed to your answers above.

1. I have many Thai business owner and professional Thai normal friends. There is no link or no credible evidence except what I hear from what they read and feel. It is funny that I see the same things as they do, but a couple even say they have immigration friends. don't figure!

If anti foreigner, why they your friend?

2. Not the point. It is about all the stories about foreigners in the news. This one just looks like an arrest from a bad guy who do bad and stay 5 days too long, but then you add all the others and we are looked as Bad people. Get it?

On the thai website, NOBODY CARE.

3. As for me seeing and reading way too many stats in Thailand from many organizations, none are credible and to me are trumped up. Don't believe any of them except the ones who say low numbers. We can all see tourists on the decline from before..

How many you think.

One million?

The only message this arrest sends is, don't overstay your visa, or time permitted to stay.

I don't get the "it isn't pleasant" part ?

in my view.. the message sent might make one think: jeez this is a complete overkill ..hmm i might visit another country

Somebody complain.

Same last week (forget the country).

the wife sell drugs.

Or maybe TM30?

What happen your country if people have no visa?

In Australia it is generally arrest, taken in to custody, deported and banned from reentering for three years. An old girlfriend of mine was supposed to leave Australia every three months on a twelve month tourist visa. We were flying to Bali for a short break on the 1st March. We should have gone on February 28th. Immediate cancellation of visa at passport control and put in detention.

Much tougher than Thailand. No chance of buying your way out of it at 500 baht a day I can assure you.

I rather have the feeling they don't look very hard for overstayers. Otherwise they should find more of them.

no need they now just wait for the willing grass to show up and collect whats ever on offer at the time  not supporting o/stays just decrying the grass slime bags

In the US- if you overstay for 180 days or less- nothing happens- no blacklist and no fine.  However, if you overstay 181 days up to a year- blacklist one year. Over 1 year- blacklist 10 years.

Most  people in the Us  who are illegal never had a Visa and entered  illegaly-  The Immigration police will deport them if found - however, there is no 90 day reporting  by anyone.

Trump arrests people for just showing up at the border and steals their children. Get real.

the average potential tourist thinking about visiting thailand seeing this might easily be swayed to visit a different country, like burma since their brutally repressive regime has a different approach.

considering pattaya is hurting for tourists now in high season you'd think immigration would place low priority on a 5 day tourist overstay and the media attention.

aint no nobel prizes on the horizon for thailand.

many an average tourist might overstay a few days.

  • If you overstay your Burmese tourist visa, it's not that big of a deal (at least as of early 2019), you simply have to pay some fines. However, don't plan on doing this as it can complicate travels within the country
  • Here's what happens:
  1. Upon leaving the country (either airport or land border crossing), you will be asked to pay a fine of $3 USD per day for each day overstayed (and $5 per day after 90 days of over overstay). There is an office at the Yangon airport specifically to handle this, and after you've paid you'll get a stamp in your passport indicating that you're "cleared" to leave. Payment is by cash USD only
  2. If your visa expires while you're inside the country, it can complicate your travels a little bit because you won't be able to fly within the country as domestic airlines will check your visa when you check in. Buses and trains are supposed to check your visa as well, but they're much more lax (especially buses as they're all privately operated and they want money). Also, hotels and guest houses are not supposed to let you stay if you don't have a valid visa, but again most smaller guest houses will let it slide

Bit out of date that info. It's 7 USD a day now.

Are you apologising for the Thais ...........just for a change!!

Where did you mention Thais in the post I responded to? I didn't mention Thais, I mentioned overstayers. Your comment makes no sense.

Am I a Thai apologist because I can apply some logic and critical thinking when I respond to a post?

I apologise if I decline to join the group of circular backslappers who try and outdo each other with their  obvious hate of Thailand, the people and their culture, yet still choose to stay here.

Why do Thai people even need to be apologised for? Their country their rules. Like it, lump it or leave. Quite simple choices really.

Thai people not interest this news. Sure.

Of course they are not.

But they still get bombarded with "bad foreigner" propaganda.

When you tell somebody something repeatedly, some start believing it.

That's exactly what Uncle and others want.

5 days seems trivial and I guess plenty of people do overstays of this length and just pay the fine on the way out. This arrest sends a message and it isn't pleasant.

And they wonder why tourists go to Vietnam ...

First they came for young men living on tourist visas and those on OA retirement mocked them, now they're coming for those on OA with medical insurance requirements and before that cancellation of affidavit of funds or income from foreign embassies, and probably those on O soon. Divine justice when a group lacks solidarity.

The reason why a 5 day overstay of a single individual is sensationalised this way, is because the current administration has been, for the last 5 years, manipulating Thai public perception.

The article above is also written for Thai consumption.

They encouraged "Thainess", where Uncle P dressed up in traditional Thai costumes and took selfies with Thai actors, and published countless articles over the years, putting foreigners in a bad light, from Operation "Good guys in Bad Guys out", X-Ray Foreigner, TM30 (what if the foreigner bombs your residence video), foreign overstayers, foreign pensioneers without insurance, and so on.

With all the propaganda, nobody cares anymore about "foreigners not meeting visa conditions".

This is quite typical in communist or non democratic regimes that wish to hang on to power, so not a big surprise there.

If the news report wasn't repeated on this forum 99% of farang would not even know about it, nor care. I would bet 99% of Thai people neither know or car either. This forum is a business and it needs people to read it to sell advertising. Nothing wrong with that, quite a common business model, tailor the news to the product (us in this case).

Shock jocks have been doing this for decades.

The reality as I see it is this is a non event in the bigger picture but gets the forum members into a frothing rage.........which is converted into hits....which converts into an attraction for potential advertisers.

Again nothing wrong with that.

Don't be surprised if another story pops up about the German guy being involved in drugs,a serious assault of whatever. Then the same posters knocking the police now will be baying for his blood.

The arrest team was led by Pol Capt Prasert Chaiwong with four other colleagues.

They were sent into action by the chief of Chonburi immigration Pol Col Samphan Leuangsajjakun who in turn was acting under orders from national immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong "Big Oud" Chingduang, said Naew Na.

Sent into action...???????????? You can't make this <deleted> up...This is international news boys and girls....
