BANGKOK(NNT) - A 4.0 magnitude earthquake last night struck Myanmar on the Myanmar-China border at 9 p.m., with the epicenter 6 kilometers below the surface; it was followed by a 3.3 magnitude quake in Laos at 10:39 p.m. The Meteorological Department’s (TMD) Director General, Group Capt Somsak Khaosuwan said today these are aftershocks from the main quake in the recent past which Thai people should not be alarmed about.

He said prior to the two quakes last night, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at 6 p.m. yesterday, as well as a 3.1 magnitude quake in Laos. Aftershocks can occur hundreds of times after the main quake for 1-2 months.

The TMD chief reassured the public that these quakes are considered a normal natural phenomenon caused by the movement of the tectonic plates, adding that modern equipment these days allows us to pinpoint tremors more precisely, and adding that the Thai public can rest assured as Thailand is not affected by these quakes.
