Thai immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang or Big Oud presided over a press conference that announced the arrest of a 37 year old South Korean wanted on an Interpol red notice.

Big Oud - the chief's moniker - stood in front of a vinyl board that said the suspect hailed from the land of kimchi (spicy fermented cabbage, the national dish of Korea).

Jijeong had lured investors online with the promise of 10% monthly returns to invest in his family's VIP tourism business in Vietnam.

It was all made up. There was no such business and no such returns were given.

Instead between June 2018 and April this year Jijeong ripped off seven investors to the tune of 500 million won or about 13 million baht.

The South Korean was a frequent visitor to Thailand and his latest trip started in April of this year when he arrived on a 90 day visit. This ran out in July.

He was found to be staying at a hotel in the Bang Rak area of the capital.

Back in October he was traced to the South Korean embassy then followed to a well known shopping center in the Din Daeng area where he was arrested on overstay.

The South Korean embassy told immigration about the red notice.

Thaivisa notes that foreigners are often given appellations based on national characteristics or stereotypes.

Brits come from the land of gentlemen, Germans hail from the land of beer, Japanese raw fish and French perfume, for example.

Australians come from the land of kangaroos.

Brits = the land of gentlemen,

Germans = the land of beer,

Japanese = land of raw fish

Korea = land of Kimchi

French = land of perfume

China = land of Panda

Thailand = land of katoey

I don't quite agree with land of smile because most Thai people don't smile to strangers unless they want to sell you something.
