New Zealand Ambassador Taha Macpherson yesterday met with former opposition leader Kem Sokha and said the latter’s trial will be closely monitored, according to an official. Sokha was arrested in September 2017 and charged with treason for allegedly colluding with the US to overthrow the government. He then spent about a year behind bars before being granted bail. Phnom Penh Municipal court set his trial for January 15.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting yesterday at Sokha’s residence in Phnom Penh, Muth Chantha, chief of Sokha’s cabinet, said the New Zealand government continues to monitor the development of Sokha’s court case. “Ambassador Macpherson said during the meeting that he will continue to observe Sokha’s case and remain supportive of democracy in the Kingdom,” Mr Chantha said.

Mr Chantha noted Mr Macpherson also urged the government to ensure civil rights, political rights, press freedom and civil society groups. Mr Macpherson yesterday declined to comment after the meeting.
