PoorSucker
“This year, the hotel market in Samui has been shaken by declining demand and reduced airlift to the island. The China slowdown is widely cited as a key factor, together with high airfares. According to Bangkok Airways, half of the company revenue is generated by flight routes connecting with Samui." Could be because about half of the total traffic of Bangkok Airways is to and from Samui...???? Number of flights might not indicate number of seat in the airplanes, if for example two ATR72 flights are changed to one Airbus 319 or 320, it's around same number of seats available, but half the number of flights. Number of passengers has been growing for years, and it's pretty normal that at some point a growth will begin to level out, including that the island's infrastructure also reach a limit, herunder the airport check-in during peak hours. GreasyFingers
I have not lived on Samui for 5 years but go back for a holiday each year to catch up with friends. I had never really noticed that may Chinese in Lamai where I lived, but maybe that has changed. A friend that runs 3 resorts has said he will probably let one of the leases go next year because of the downturn.
emptypockets
Never been to Samui but fly twice a month on Bangkok Airlines internationally. Hard to believe 50% of the revenue is from the Bangkok to Samui route. Sounds like a strategy to go broke.
