Japan has very strict drink driving laws while Thailand is sometimes seen as a joke in this regard, notes Thaivisa. The media claimed to have confronted officials in Nakorn Ratchasima about it only to be told that it was impossible to stop DUI - so they were just appealing for drunks to drive slowly at New Year. Sanook reported on the story with part of a headline that stated "Media from the land of sushi absolutely confused". They pointed out that Thailand does not allow drink driving. I asked my wife about this and she said "You can not change destiny, if meant to die will die, so why fight to change something". Now we already can agree that they are totally irresponsible for driving drunk in the first place. Since alcohol slows your reaction time, you CAN compensate to a large degree by slowing down. There are limits to this as well of course. If you are totally inebriated, then driving slow won't help. If you have forgotten how to talk, then driving slow won't help. If you can't walk, then driving slow won't help. But if you are under the limit or even near the limit, you definitely CAN reduce chances of accidents by slowing down. Makes perfect sense to me. Before I get flamed, please understand, I am not saying to drive drunk. I am saying that if you know you have had one drink, you can compensate for slower reaction times by slowing down. I know lots of guys who don't do that, it's pedal to the metal with impaired reaction times, and that is true stupidity. If you are a public worker, teacher, university professor, a DUI conviction will result in your being fired from your job 100% of the time. Even a lot of private sector companies follow the same policy. The legal penalties are a fine of up to $5000 USD and/or three years in jail. One expat in my company when I was in Japan got caught DUI, just above the limit. I used to cycle home from parties at university in a very poor state, once I even crashed my bike cycling through a graveyard. What is the law about riding a bicycle whilst intoxicated in Thailand? Or maybe an e-bike? I know many Thai people would rather poke themselves in the eye with a needle than ride a bicycle, but an electric bicycle might tempt them away from driving drunk.
