Visa on arrival problem

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Hello everyone,

I just arrived in Thailand, i will stay 30 days and i have return ticket yet. At arrival i have not paid attention and the officer just give me 29 days, now i have the visa expiring one day before leave. What can i do? Tomorrow i will go airport to pick a friend, can i solve my problem there or should i go to immigration office?

Thank to all for suggestions

You are aware that day of arrival counts as day number one?  Expect you are talking about a visa exempt entry allowing 30 day stay which can be extended at immigration office for an additional 30 days.

You're right, are 30 days counting the day of entry. For just 1 day i have the only chance to extend 1 month at 1900? No other cheap way?

That is the cheap way if you can not rearrange your flight.  You could exit/return but that would cost more.  You could overstay and probably not have any issue other than an overstay stamp - but it is always worthwhile for most of us to avoid such issues just pay for our mistake.

Well, thanks. Now everything's clear. Wish you good night

If it is just one day, it's better to just pay the fine of 500 baht when you leave rather than extending by one month.

If you're flying out of one of the Bangkok airports the 500 baht fine is waived if the overstay is less than 24 hours, though there would be an overstay stamp in the passport.

Back in 2006  I over  stayed 8 days

Overstay stamp in passport.

Never a problem.

It was not transferred to the next passport.

That aside your advice to OP is sound!

2006 is not 2020 and never a problem until it is a problem.  Where previously overstay was most often treated with a smile as forgetfulness and a small fine imposed it is now often seen as possible criminal activity and most wanted poster material.  Better not to have any such stamps in today's world if it can be easily avoided.

Just pay the 500 bahts at the airport for one day overstay, they'll tell you at the airport anyway.  Less than 24 hr overstay you don't pay.  No worries.

The fact is any overstay makes you subject to arrest, fine and deportation.  How it is actually handled can very but most of us would consider a 1,900 baht extension a much better option - especially if intending to make Thailand visits in the future.

Not in my experience although that was a few years back. Leaving BKK with a 1 day overstay there was no fine and no stamp. It was ignored.

Immigration at Suvarnabhumi doesn't care about 1 day overstay. Smile and pay the fine if they even want the money for just one day. There is so much paranoia here at TV.

I think that is where the difference is.

A few years back I went 10 years without doing a 90 day report.

A few year back no one did a TM 30.

A few years back things were different. This is 2019/20 and immigration have a new boss and new "rules" to follow.

For get the "few years back" and live for today.

Was short 2016, 1 day in Phuket, had to pay 500 baht fine. They say BK is easier and you dont have to pay.

Speak for yourself, spend a miserable long day at CW and pay 1900 baht or pay nothing at the airport as there is usually a one day waiver but as they say..up to you

You won't get an elite visa anymore with an overstay, i would not be surprised if that gets extended to other visas in the future.

Overstay because of lazyness and not health issues is stupid, but up 2 you...

I think it is 2 overstays ever. I have an overstay for 2 days from 2016 because I put the wrong date in my diary for a border run. My fault and caused me a minor panic. In the end 1000 baht fine and a stamp in my passport. Because of this I looked up the Elite Visa requirements and I am pretty sure it said 2 or more overstays (ever) disqualifies you.

You seem to think that an Elite Visa is a very big thing in Thailand. Compared to all Non-immigrant Visas combined, the number is very low. Look at the link:
