webfact
UAE halal certification officials praise Thai standards By THE NATION Bureau of Livestock Standards and Certification director Sopat Chavalkul said UAE halal certification officials have voiced appreciation for Thailand’s halal standards amid a drive by the agency to promote the export of livestock products to the United Arab Emirates. The director made the comment after he attended a recent meeting with officials from the UAE’s Climate Change and Environment Ministry and the Ajman Municipality. “Exports can be carried out on the condition that the products pass UAE halal certification,” he said. “UAE officials visited Thailand in December to evaluate the quality of slaughter houses, checking on the standard of food safety,” Sopat said. During their December 16-19 trip, the Emirates International Accreditation Centre (EIAC) team was welcomed by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand and Department of Livestock Development representatives. The EIAC is the Gulf country’s halal certification agency. The UAE centre voiced its appreciation for Thailand’s halal system, which was praised for being a prominent halal-standard system in the world. The EIAC check was undertaken in accordance with International Organisation for Standardisation guidelines. “This is expected to help generate more revenue – over Bt1 billion – for Thailand,” Sopat added. I have to agree, but unfortunately, at least in U.K. all the supermarket chains now sell nearly all halal foods. They hide the accreditation under labels or in small print. It is just a muslim tax, and nowadays shoppers have so little choice to avoid them. I remember a friend from Australia told me about a dairy product where they put the halal label inside the package, you nobody knew until they had purchased and opened it...... 3

How about the frozen beef from Australia (for example)? It's not truly halal unless it is killed according to Islamic traditional which would include - killed by a Muslim, via a knife to the throat, who is saying bismillah irrohman irroheem and/or reciting the Quran before, during and after etc. I sincerely doubt that this is being done for all the "halal" meats. If not done then these meats are haram, not halal. I seriously doubt if these chickens are being killed in the appropriate manner either (maybe they were while the "inspection" team was here to inpect and approve them but I can't see the Thai's following these rules after the inspection team leaves).
