Ukrainian Boeing 737 with at least 170 aboard crashes in Iran

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Ukrainian airliner with at least 170 people on board crashed on Wednesday due to technical problems soon after taking off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport, Iran's official news agency IRNA reported.

Rescue teams have been sent to an area near the airport where the Boeing 737 belonging to Ukraine International Airlines crashed, Reza Jafarzadeh, a spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, told state television.

"The plane is on fire but we have sent crews ... and we may be able to save some passengers." Pirhossein Koulivand, head of Iran's emergency services, told the television.

He later said: "The fire is so heavy that we cannot (do) any rescue... we have 22 ambulances, four bus ambulances and a helicopter at the site."

Jafarzadeh put the number of passengers on board the flight at 170.

According to air tracking service FlightRadar24, the plane that crashed was on Flight PS 752.

IRNA said according to preliminary information "the plane was bound for Kiev ... and had 180 passengers and crew."

Boeing said the company was aware of media reports of a plane crash in Iran and was gathering more information.

As it crashed whilst Iran was firing a volley of missiles at US bases in Iraq, I'll wager that the technical problem was a rocket up it's rear end. Just too much of a coincidence.

  • There are reports of a potential shoot-down either accidental or deliberate ????   https://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/628650-ukrainian-aircraft-down-iran.html

  • Another unverified image showing possible warhead fragmentation damage.

I wonder if it is a Max that had wiring problems as discovered recently

What a terrible tragedy. I hope calm heads prevail in the coming investigations ????

RIP..... and (maybe) no Russians on board? smells fishy

That video would certainly support a potential shoot-down, maybe Iran air defenses mistaking it for a B52

Ouch!!!!

Either way, pretty bad news.... Either a shootdown, or another Boeing plane (but not a MAX) crashing due to some problem.....

That video clearly shows that the plane was on fire before it crashed.

Wow....I can imagine the Iranians not telling airlines what they're planning to do due to

secrecy etc....but this is crazy.....and could have possibly been avoided. I hope no others

follow.

The technical problem must've been the ground crew forgot to install the anti-missile equipment.

Why would the Ukrainians be shooting at anything in Iran? ????

A Boeing 737-800, registration UR-PSR performing flight PS-752.

Plane is only 3.6 years old!

And that quick "technical problem" news is very suspicious!

Since when is a Ukrainian plane an Iranian?

A standard 737-800. One of the most flown planes and highly reliable.

In the past, Boeing knew how to build safe planes.

Technical problem could be true or not, but suspicious it is not IMO. Any technical problem would quickly be known and the ATC would have known.

Do electrical gremlins typically cause a airplane to nose into the ground in a blaze of glory ?

From Aviation Herald:

Quote

was climbing through 8000 feet out of Tehran's runway 29R about 12nm northwest of the airport at about 06:18L (02:48Z), when the aircraft's transponder signals ceased.

No mention of any unusual communication or the like.

No, you will not yet find that communication (if any) on Aviation Herald. Doesn't mean they did not warn ATC of a fire raging on board.

Whatever the cause: a terrible blow for the airlines flying through (to/from) the gulf area. Would you book?

Video is pretty convincing that the plane was on fire prior to the crash.  That would seem to indicate some sort of bomb on board or a missile hitting the plane.  Mechanical failures would not have caused the plane to catch fire.
