As it crashed whilst Iran was firing a volley of missiles at US bases in Iraq, I'll wager that the technical problem was a rocket up it's rear end. Just too much of a coincidence.

  • There are reports of a potential shoot-down either accidental or deliberate ????   https://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/628650-ukrainian-aircraft-down-iran.html

  • Another unverified image showing possible warhead fragmentation damage.

So, I'll be the impertinent one here.  Anyone else curious why there were 63 people leaving Tehran on Canadian passports?

Notice that I didn't say "Canadians" leaving Tehran...

The BBC, quoting the Ukranian foreign minister was more specific:-

"Among the victims were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians - including all of the crew, 10 Swedes, four Afghans and three Germans, Vadym Prystaiko said".

My reference was to an "Argo" scenario...  And I wasn't aware that Canadian travel in Iran was so open, with Canada being in the Five Eyes alliance.

210,000 or so Iranians live in Canada and many of them have Canadian passport:

Iranian Canadians
ایرانیان کانادایی
Total population
210,405 (2016 census)[1]

Iranian Canadians or Persian Canadians[2][3] are citizens of Canada whose national background is traced from Iran or are people possessing Iranian and Canadian dual citizenship.[4] From the 2016 Canadian census, the main communities can be found in Southern Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. The vast majority, however, live in the northern suburbs of Toronto such as Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Markham, and Thornhill, and in the municipalities of Vancouver such as: North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, and Coquitlam. As of 2016 a total of 97,110 Iranians reside in the Greater Toronto Area[5], 46,255 in the Greater Vancouver Area[6], 23,410 in the Greater Montreal Area[7], and the remainder are spread out in the other major cities in Canada based on the 2016 Canadian Census. These numbers represent the people who stated "Iranian" as their (or one of their) ethnic origin in the census survey.

It is likely that foreign embassies in Iran have been looking for any available way to evacuate part of their nationals after the American strike.

Rip,a sad day for many

One has to wonder why Iran is refusing to hand over the black box? Wow if they did shoot this plane down they will really have stepped in their own doo doo. To make matters worse it had Canadians. Canadians get outraged if one of them die more than most. Not an American on the plane so it makes me wonder.

I will throw out the possibility the Iranians shot down the wrong plane.

It's just as likely that someone else shot it down and Iran doesn't want to turn the data over to someone who may cover up their role, or cast the blame somewhere else.

The 737-800 NG also has frame problems, recently identified in heavy use aircraft.  That could be a nail in Boeing's coffin, added to the problems with the 737 Max.

But it's all speculation...

Watched the stock today. It sure wasn't trading like the majority of people were thinking it was a mechanical failure. The longer they hold it the guiltier they look. I hope they get their airport blacklisted from passenger jets if they continue to play stupid games.

You have been spreading rumours here, better to stick to the facts.

Source please. Nothing like starting a rumour based on?

It's called speculation and I am hardly alone.

Or engine fan blades coming apart.

Seems to me that fan blades disintegrating would fly sideways. Similar holes in the fuselage might fit that, but not, IMO in the wing.

Thankfully the Iranians are being fully transparent about the matter so we can put aside conspiracy theories once and for all.

Agree. Just exactly who was on the plane that got shot down? Was this Iran's actual response to the drone strike on the general? Not that diversionary attack on the air base?

The only way we'd ever know is for a journalist to do a background check on each and every passenger on the manifest and report their findings.  But I can't see that happening without interference on the grounds of National Security (or whatever they call it in Canada...)  Or, just as likely, a sham effort perpetrated by our governments, full of all kinds of falsehoods.

Either way, I wouldn't trust an "all clear" anyway.

I can't say I'd blame them, especially in the near term when they probably have a lot more folks they need to get out.

So we have accepted as a fact the plane has been shot down now?

From what I understand the Canadians were mostly university students who went to see family in Iran over the New Year break

If by 'we' you mean Zydeco and Cryingdick, possibly. Many others will want to refrain from your speculation.

International flights after this incident are avoiding flying over Iran.

They probably won't land there either if Iran keeps the black box hostage.

I'd rather wait for the results of the aircrash- investigation, but hey...this is ThaiVisa, so let the conclusion- jumping- competition begin!

What, in case they get a sudden "technical failure" too?

Not a rumour, just my opinion. Where did I say that anything in my post was a fact? We are entitled to have opinions, aren't we?

Since the post I made, I have now changed my opinion (is that allowed?) and now think, on the balance of probability, it was a mechanical failure.

I guess it all depends on how strongly or not you believe in coincidences.

"Iran’s insistence that it will not hand over the black boxes to Boeing comes amid claims that at least two aircraft which had been originally routed through Iranian airspace around the time of the Iranian missile attacks on the bases in Iraq were either told to turn around or redirected."
