Pada Vorakanon

A lawmaker from the ruling Palang Pracharath Party, Pada Vorakanon has urged the government to launch measures to reduce the impact from increasing PM2.5 dust particles in the air.

She said on Friday (January 10) the reason the level of PM2.5 dust particles in the air has exceeded the standard in many areas nationwide, especially in Bangkok and its surrounding areas, is because of pollution caused by vehicles, burning of crops and weak winds.

“The government and related authorities should launch stringent measures to prevent this problem by imposing serious penalties on violators.” She called for intensive regulations, such as barring private cars from the inner Bangkok area, or collecting fees for cars that enter the inner Bangkok area.

“This measure could be tried as a pilot project one day a week to reduce the impact of this problem.”

She added that people might disagree with this measure in the beginning, but she believes that they will certainly adapt to the situation.

“If the problem is prolonged, the impact will be on the people themselves. Therefore, if we do not sacrifice some comfort now, the situation could be much worse later,” she warned.

Start with a pilot program that bans private cars belonging to or driven by old farangs over the retirement age. It's a twofer: a reduction in pollution and a reduction in accidents due to deteriorating physical skills and reaction times.

Going after the crop/fields and garbage burners would have a bigger impact, not just in BKK, but across the country.

And instead of banning vehicle use, how about starting a nationwide vehicle inspection and certification system for tailpipe emissions. It would make money, provide employment and do a lot to clean the air.

If your vehicle doesn't pass, you have to have it serviced to come into compliance with tailpipe emissions standards, and then have it retested to pass.

While I agree those are good ideas, there's simply no-one to enforce them.

The black-smoke belching diesel pick-ups driven by Somchai boy-racers are out of control in Chonburi and Pattaya.

But 80 odd year old Thai former cabinet ministers that knock people off their motorbikes and try to flee the scene of an accident can continue to drive unimpeded.

Glad that's sorted.

O-Please logic is never part of the conversation here.....Its do absolutely nothing for ages followed by jack-boot knee jerk reactions and threats followed by desperate backtracking followed by forgetting the whole thing....

You are a beautiful woman, but what you ask of an inconsistent and incompetent government seems impossible to me.
Take a look at all the laws released in recent decades, most have been canceled after they entered into force, many others have been postponed and still not in effect today.
Some of the laws of the past would have saved lives if they had been brought in and enforced.
Anyway good luck, maybe you can sweeten some of the square heads!

Same here.......

A couple of years ago the police said , " we would like to catch and find the people responsible but we don't know who it is ".  Well you won't find anybody sat in your a/c police stations...... Follow the smoke and not the money.

How about make all government people take bus to work. No chauffer's, not special benefits.

Busses are one of the major polluters, they produce more smoke than

a coffee shop in Amsterdam on a Sunday!!

Until the invalids in their 4 wheel combustion carriages accept they are a major contributor to the problem, and are too selfish to give up their comfortable one driver mode of transport to benefit others, then there is no alternative but to ban them.

Lets stop with the blaming farmers burning a couple of weeks year, there are few major issues outside the cities, so what does that tell you - all the farmers smoke is headed straight to Bangkok from the surrounding farm land and sits there 365 days a year

Are there so many lazy motorists out there who are not capable taking responsibility to change their method of transport? that they trumpet the first ready made excuse in order to deflect from their selfishness.
