Hezbollah: It's time for Iran's allies to start working to avenge Soleimani

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's Hezbollah said on Sunday it was time for Iran's allies to begin working to retaliate for the killing of Major General Qassem Soleimani though it would be a "long path" to the goal of ejecting U.S. forces from the region.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah also denied the Iranian general had been planning to blow up U.S. embassies. U.S. President Donald Trump said he had been killed after he landed in Baghdad in part because "they were looking to blow up our embassy".

Hezbollah, a heavily armed group designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States, was established in 1982 by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and is an important part of a regional Tehran-led alliance known as "the axis of resistance".

Iran responded for Soleimani's killing by launching missiles at two military bases in Iraq that house U.S. forces on Wednesday. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called it a "slap on the face" of the United States and said U.S. troops should leave the region.

Though the region remains tense, both sides have backed off from intensifying the conflict since the Iranian attack.

Nasrallah said last week that Iran's allies, which include the Syrian government and numerous paramilitary groups set up with Iranian support in Iraq and Syria, should help exact revenge for Soleimani's killing.

"I believe it is time for the axis of resistance to start working," he said in his speech on Sunday.

"The resistance forces are serious and aiming for the big goal that I proposed," Nasrallah said, referring to the objective of seeing U.S. forces leave the region.

Retaliation would happen in the "coming days, weeks and months", he said, adding "this is a long path".

Explaining the decision to kill Soleimani, Trump said on Thursday "they were looking to blow up our embassy".

He also said the United States carried out the strike because of a rocket attack on a U.S. military base in Iraq by an Iran-backed militia in December that killed a U.S. contractor, which U.S. officials believe Soleimani had a role in orchestrating.

Nasrallah said: "Trump is lying to his people ... Haj Qassem Soleimani was not planning to blow up American embassies."

The United States holds Hezbollah responsible for the suicide bombing that destroyed the U.S. Marine headquarters in Beirut in October 1983, killing 241 servicemen, and a suicide bombing the same year on the U.S. embassy.

Well, if a terror group says so it must be true. They were only trying to burn the Embassy down.

Impressive list of allies, some terror groups. Like some people doing some things.

Suleymani came back from Damascus and went to Kerbala after the Iranian consulate was attacked by pro Sunni militia.

He had nothing to do with the Iraqi attack of the US embassy. A retaliation after 25 Iraqi Shia soldiers died after US bombings.

He had nothing to do for the fact that Iraqi government stopped US military advisory.

Trump was presented a list of targets. I'm sure Soleimeini had a list too that included US Embassies.

Iran is every where in the region and Soleimani controls these activates, it's his job description. He may not have been personally involved in such attacks.

An Iranian-backed militia said Monday that the death toll from U.S. military strikes in Iraq and Syria against its fighters has risen to 25, vowing to exact revenge for the "aggression of evil American ravens."

The U.S. attack - the largest yet targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia - and the calls for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East that could threaten U.S. interests in the region.

Let me add, I do not mourn soleimiani’s passing or support Hezbollah.

I guess the attack on the US Embassy in Bagdad was just a ruse then, right?

There was a plan in place to take out Soleimani for 18 months prior to him being killed.

How about the blowing up of the US Embassy in Beirut in 1983.

History has a nasty way of repeating itself.

It's not like the Secretary of Defense says differently...oh wait:

Esper says he’s seen no hard evidence embassies under threat

Defense Secretary Mark Esper explicitly said Sunday that he had seen no hard evidence that four American embassies had been under possible threat when President Donald Trump authorized the targeting of Iran’s top commander, raising questions about the scale of the threat described by Trump last week.

As the administration struggled with its justification for the drone strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, Esper and other officials tried to refocus attention on voices of dissent in Iran.

US don’t have carte blanche in connotation nor the authority to name anyone a terrorist. They often use this as excuse to launch wars or assassinate someone without clear evidence.

Amazing - a life long terrorist responsible for killing thousands of people - many directly and the rest via proxies funded - trained and assisted. And somehow there gas to be a new reason to take this career murderer out - ridiculous. It is even more amazing that people will reveal themselves as defenders of a fiendish career murderer.  This mind twisting behavior by people defending this agent of horror and death is so far beyond the pale as to be unbelievable in normal times.

Interesting how that word "terrorist" gets thrown around. Apparently, it only applies to those who wreak havoc on you and yours. And whether or not the targets were soldiers or civilians. What about Mohammed bin Salman, Trump's good friend, who has created the worst humanitarian disaster  in the world with his brutal assault on Yemen? Are you indignant about that much?

Leaders of extremist terror groups and their spokes people can be relied on to speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Sure thing.

Do you deny this person was the head of the Quds of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Coprs? Do you know what their role is? Have you read any of this person's previous statements?

Who does have the authority then? The Mickey Mouse UN?

It's highly unlikely a member of this forum would have access to such evidence. In fact it's not going to be made available to any Westerner nor the Western media. Such a plan would be kept secret for obvious security reasons!

But perhaps it's time Trump closed the embassies, pulled his people out of the region and diverted US interests to where they'll be appreciated and cause less trouble.

There will never be peace in the area while Westerners are there and probably not if we were to leave either but then it would be none of our business.

The British and other Europeans pulled their interests and influence out of Persia and Mesopotamia (Iran and Iraq) after WW1 because as Churchill discovered you could never deal with them, could never get them to cooperate nor could you trust the Mohammedans as he called them.

When all is said and done no people like their country being occupied and controlled by outsiders especially when those occupiers are hated as much as uninvited infidels in Islamic lands are.

It was the same with the French in Algeria in the 50s and 60s. The 'suitcase or the coffin' was what Abdul told De Gaulle and his chums. They chose the suitcase.

Big Don ought to start looking for his oil elsewhere.

I will put the same sinister references on Salman, Putin and Kim. Who chose to label them as bff and not as terrorists. This has all the trappings of Trump’s twisted mind.

Agree with a lot there, however will say if posters can’t back up their assertions then they shouldn’t make them.
