A five-metre long whale shark estimated to weigh two tonnes was spotted near Maya Bay in Krabi province on Monday (January 13), authorities said.

Worapoj Lomlim, chief of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park in Krabi, said on Monday that a group of divers had recorded a video of a five-metre long and two-tonne whale shark swimming and eating plankton five metres below the water surface in the area of Koh Bida Nok island, which is close to Maya Bay.

The chief said there had been many instances of these sightings since the government decided to close Maya Bay on July 1, 2018.

True, but sad to see that one fish showing up is worthy of the news.

To be honest whaleshark sightings are relatively common in that area and where also prior to the closure of Maya Bay. So I'd say the closure has nothing to do with this sighting. On the other hand the return of juvenile black reef sharks into Maya Bay is very likely due to the area being protected. One would hope they'd close more areas of Phi Phi and limit the number of tours going there. It's still very, very busy everywhere except Maya Bay.
