Renewing car registration - how far in advance?

Featured Replies

My car registration expires Feb 18 but I will be out of the country then. I was planning to do it tomorrow but it occurs to me they might not allow so far in advance? I have already renewed the insurance so that is not an issue.

Does anyone know how early it can be done? And also is there a "grace" period if you do it after the expiration date?

Best telephone your local DLT office in your province they are all different, and you can always get up to date when you get back if the vehicle is not being used.

Up to 3 months (90 days) early is what I am told here.  I never asked about the grace period.

I just did mine six weeks early, no problem

I was fined in Phan at a checkpoint for being 2 weeks overdue (inadvertent ), went to the Phan DLT and renewed without any problem.

I doubt if they will let you do it tomorrow ,you could do it when you get back ,and if your area is like ours ,they will back date it to 18th February .

Had that with one of our motorbikes ,forgot  the expiry date  and to re new it ,and they just back dated it to the original expiry date.

You can renew at least 3 months before the expiry date.

3 months before, a small small fine if late
